Hey all...just looking for some help...if possible. I have an IBM TPR40 - 1.5mhz / Centrino P4 - 512 ram - Radeon Mobility 64mb - smooth as silk with most everything...but Doom 3. I've tried setting everything for performance instead of quality and set all levels in the game to low...still too choppy to play...is this even possible with this card, or is there something I'm missing? (have the latest card drivers as well)

Not sure, but what I can tell you is that card isnt listed on the box under Minimum System Requirements/Supported Chipsets :(
Welcome to SysOpt by the way :D

Could be the Mobility 7500 is a Dx7 class part. I hate to tell you this, but you probably need a different machine to run this game on.:t

well...thanks anyway...maybe someone will have something...im thinking it won't work though. Looks like its time to actually get a desktop thrown together with some real gaming power.
Thanks for the warm welcome btw! - :) -I work in IT and it's nice to browse through all the various posts and see people who actually know what they are talking about...not just a bunch of mindless rambling - hehe...:)

Yes the 7500 is a DirectX 7 part and the mobility 9000 thru 9200 are DirectX 8.1. Mobility 9600+ are DirectX 9.- parts.
I would make a Socket A , NForce2 with a 9600 Pro or better for a cheap gaming machine, or a A64 Via platform I my pockets jingled a lillttle more. If I wanted to go Intel I think I might stay with a 975 board.. Good luck

Or for about that same price as the 9600 Pro you can get the card I'm using... the FX 5700 Ultra - Just another idea :)

Try updating your drivers (more specifically your video drivers) from IBM's website: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?doctypeind=9&template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2Fdown loadsDriversLandingPage.vm

Yeah, but you still need DirectX 9.0b for Doom 3 :(

You're not going to be able to get the game to run well no matter what with that hardware. My laptop has a P4 2.8B and a 64MB FX5600 and it ran like **** even at low settings on 800x600.
Doom3 is OpenGL

Hrmm, I thought you needed a card that supports DX9.0. Well either way I guess its not that big of a deal, here's their bit about the graphics:
“ATI Technologies and nVidia are the two biggest providers of graphics cards. As you move up either company’s set of offerings, the results will improve. Cards at the top of the heap — nVidia’s GeForce FX and newer 6800 series, or ATI’s Radeon 9800 or newer X series — will provide the best experience and cost the most.
If you’re upgrading, look for at least 128 MB of video memory in a card with Direct X 9.0 capability that installs into an AGP slot. Cards in the $150 to $200 range — such as a GeForce 5900XT or a Radeon 9600XT — will be a sweet spot.”

The graphics rendering API is Open GL, Direct X components are needed though most likely for the sound API etc.
John Carmack just plain dont do Direct X engines.

Thank you all tons for the input! I had thought too that it was Direct 3D...so good to know it's all OpenGL based now...that will help in the purchase of a new card. Funny how a game can make you want to upgrade your gear...haha...pathetic maybe?...haha...anyhoo...much gracias to you all...see ya 'round the forums and happy Doom'ing...I'm right behind ya! :) - oh btw...check out the link below - I found it the other day while diggin around. For those of you who can and are actually running the game, but want to see some improvement...try this tweak (you all prolly already know about it...but just in case)
In your DOOM 3 directory, find "DoomConfig.cfg" (x:\Program Files\Doom 3\base). Open DoomConfig.cfg in Notepad.
Find the line:
seta image_cacheMegs "32"
change it from 32 to 96 to start off (or from whatever it currently is)...if you have at lease 512 ram, maybe try up'ing it to 128...you should see some frame rate increase...looks like it's worked well for some people...check it out:
