I run my system with the cover off as I o/c too. I have my system on top of my desk so i dont get anything dropped or kicked into it (got to love kids) All I do is break out the compressed air a bit more often to get rid of the extra dust that builds up in it. But it runs much cooler so I dont mind the extra 5 seconds a month I spend maintaning my system

Go ahead and run without the cover..youll be happier with the cooler/more stable system

Now were's my penny for my thoughts? LOL

hmm so dust and stuff like that are not dangerous ?? if u get rid of it ? with say compressed air ?? i havent O/C yet but im thinking of getting mi p3 500 to 616 mhz or even higher

about the only things you have to worry about getting inside your computer is you kid's fingers, your cat, or something that is metal or electricly conductive. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif the small amount of dust that will buildup is nothing to worry about unless you let it buildup big time (i have cleaned systems that have not been cleaned for years and could have made a small pillow out of the dust bunnies that had built up in there). and they were still running ok (other than running hotter than normal)...Good luck over clockin....running my celery 333a(2.0volts standard) at 500 @2.2 volts on a ASUS P2B-F board (hopefully I can drop the voltage back down after the chip fully burns in)

Why not make like a kind of frame like you have on high end audio speakers using speaker cloth? That would allow air flow AND keep the dust off. It would be light and easy to remove too. Not like those heavy steel things.

Why not try a screen that's used for a porch? It'll keep fingers and objects out of it, well to a point anyway.

wouldent that cause static and thats not good for the comp

I don't know exactly, but I can't imagine that static is good for audio performance either. Hi Fi is electronics, so a Hi Fi fan could answer your question better. Many Hi Fi users are also using PCs for audio applications and so would not be completely alien to the question.

Somewhere out there, is a Hi Fi forum, I betcha. Check it out myself? I'm still trying to put together a better basic system without destroying the components. One thing at a time. Meanwhile, DX50.

Nathan:

A metal screen would shower the components with metal dust. Close though, maybe they come in plastic.

You can get those porch screens in fibreglass instead of aluminum, so that should solve the conductivity problem. The problem is that it would still let a lot of dust in. The speaker cloth might be a good idea though. Secure it with velcro or something?

I wouldn't leave my case open, have you tried to put another fan inside the unit?

allready have 3 90mm fans in the comp + 1 cpu fan and if i leave the case open i get a temp of around 30c if i leave it on the temp rises to around 50c

That's what I was referring to was the plastic. I have my case covers off most of the time anyway.

As to the dust question, I wouldn't worry. The amount of dust in my system isn't much more than if I had it enclosed. The bottom line with it is you have more air movement through the computer.

I used some foam air-conditioner filter on the fans in my system. The front of my Elan-Vital T-10AB case has lots of open space betweeen the plastic face and metal case. I just cut a few small holes for the face's connection hooks to poke through. About once a month I take the face off, rinse the filter, let it dry a few hours and put it back.

hey dudes...I have YET to see a computer running w/ the case off that had as much dust as w/ the case on...I mean even just puffing a bit of air out of your mouth in the general direction of the case will keep it cleaned enough...I mean my house is not dusty I guess...but I've never run w/ the case on, either for overclocking or just for access, I'm always adding or changing stuff, and what's funny is when you take the case off one that's been on for a few years, theres like HUGE piles of the stuff, because once it gets in theres no place for it to go. And boy do things run cooler... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I have some neat ideas as how to keep your computer cool on way will keep it at -40c or less **** !!! thats cold what you do is get strong air conditioner coils or other things like it at 5000 btu's or greater and make a tank and set your mohterboard in it with all the other devises exept drives, cd rom's, and other things that cant get wet... and then fill the tank with mineral water or some other non conductive fluid and poof -40 c or lower now thats one cool comp he he

p.s. I love the screen/speaker cloth ideas and for more info on the wet comp idea go to Dr freezes web page i forgot the url but you can maybe gess at it.
