I've been fighting an error with an Epson USB to Parallel cable to an Epson 600. It says there was a fatal error to the EPXUSB1 and to restart Windows. Epson says the fix is to get the following files mentioned in MSKB Article Q189591:

- Openhci.sys version 4.10.2018 dated 7/6/98 8:18pm 21,904 bytes
- Usbd.sys version 4.10.2018 dated 7/6/98 8:18pm 17,568 bytes
- Usbhub.sys version 4.10.2018 dated 7/6/98 8:18pm 27,136 bytes"

When I do a Windows update these files don't get updated & I can find no place at MS that leads to them. Does anyone know where to get them from so I can see if this corrects teh problem?

Thanks

All those files I have are dated 5/11/98.

Sorry, sounds kinda strange to me.

Which version of windows are you using? I have the last two and they say 1998 not 2018. Try contacting Epson Directly you may get a voice with a pulse and tell them your delima. If you have already tried this you may want to go to the motherboard manufacture for USB driver updates if USB is on-board. Last would be a tech store in your neighborhood(last one can be expensive). If this doesn't work you can always sell it to me to figure out.(LOL) sorry bad humor.

Just in case you haven't, here's something from Epson worth trying.

It has been reported that early versions of the Intel 82371SB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller on the motherboard do not support USB. The symptom is, when installing the printer via USB it does not show up or install correctly with Windows 98. If the Chipset is an Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller or other version there should not be a problem.

To see if the computer has an older controller, you can check the following:

1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.
2. Double-click System, then click on the Device Manager tab.
3. Double-click the Universal Serial Bus Controller branch to expand it.
4. Double-click "Intel 82371SB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller", then click the general tab.
5. Check if the Hardware Version line indicates the version of the USB Controller as 000. If it is version 000, the motherboard will need to be replaced with one with a newer Intel chipset. There is no software patch or upgrade for this.

-it should be 001 or higher- B.E.

If your computer has the newer Intel controller and still doesn't recogize the USB printer after installation, try the following to get the printer to work via USB:

1. Click "Start"
2. Go to "Settings"
3. Click "Control Panel"
4. Open the "System" folder
5. Click the "Device manager" tab
6. Remove any Epson USB devices
7. Check for any "Other Devices" (indicated with a "?" ) That represent an Epson product and remove it also.
8. Click "OK" (do not restart YET)
9. In the control panel Go to "Add/Remove Programs"
10. Remove ALL Epson software
11. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer
12. Click "Start"
13. Click "Shutdown"
14. Select "Restart"
15. Click "OK"
16. Once the computer has completed the startup process and the desktop is up plug the USB cable into the computer (with the printer on)
17. An on-screen guide will appear to walk you through the rest of the process.

NOTE : If the on-screen guide does not come up now try the "other" USB port on the computer.

PS.
Glad to hear your prolonged battle with CTPlayer has come to an satisfactory conclusion.

My mobo is an FIC VA-503+ with VIA chipset, so the Intel Cntroller issue shouldn't be the issue - I'm using the VIA VT83C572/VT82C586 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller. I've looked around FIC's website & don't see any evidence of issues with their USB controller, Might see what VIA says. On the CompuServe forum and in Emails I've had with Epson they keep referring to the MSKB article and that the updated files are the anser, but no one knows where to find them and Epson doesn't supply them. They also say that this is an issue when the PC goes into standby, but I'm talking about printing anytime, even right after a restart. But then, sometimes I can get a couple of printouts before the error comes back. Finally put the printer on LPT1 on the wifes PC as the network printer so I feel the printer itself actually works.

BBA - I'm using Win98. Found it intersting that you say you have the last 2 files, I had the same thing & had a friend of mine send me the openhci.sys via email, but it's also an older version.

Edge - I've uninstalled & reinstalled the printer, USB cable, and drivers once already, but will try again using your sequence as a sanity check & will post results in a day or so. Have to get back to pulling the siding off the garage - life ain't all fun & games & computers!

Thanks for all the help.

Well, I believe it's working OK now. I haven't done a whole lot of printing, but I haven't seen any errors. On the VIA website I found a USB patch that I applied & it look slike it's working correctly now.
