Ain't it always the junior members asking questions? Anywho I have two identical 128mb pc100 dimms, either one works fine alone but when I add the second, I get win98 protection faults.

Alton Mb598 Sis 530 chip
k6-2 400
WD 18.0 expert
cmi8330 sound
usb mouse

I have removed all but these devices, formatted and reinstalled win98, and still when I add the second ram chip, I get a startup screen and then a crash. I more than likely left something out, so ask away.

I guess I need to clarify, I have used both chips alone before. Chip 1 by itself works fine, and chip 2 by itself works also. Just both together cause problems http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks though!

If they are different brands, then they may not work together too.

HI, everyone! Please, check if one of the slot where you insert the memory is cracked. Since you said they work fine by themselves, I don't think the chips are the problem.

Thanks Antonio, that is one thought I hadn't had. Come to think of it, the supports behind the motherboard are a little inadequate. I will check that out asap.

Just in case anyone ever comes back and takes a look at this, my ram problem is partially figured out. I just happened to start goofing around with overclocking my cpu after I posted my last message and decided to check and see if putting the ram in wierd slots would work. It did, and when I moved it back, it still worked. When I dropped my cpu back down to 400 where it should be (K6-2 BTW), my ram went nuts again. In both cases the bus speed is 100Mhz. So, I am now running at 450, and everything is peachy. Still I would like to know WTH(H=heck instead of) happened.

What CAS setting are you using in the BIOS?

Check both chips and make sure the part numbers match EXACTLY. This is a 6 digit number usually on a white label stuck to the first chip on the stick. Every number has a meaning, so they have to MATCH.
