Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Fatal Exception Problem
I have an ACER computer system that I used the ACER RECOVER CD to restore the system defaults, since the system was purchased with windows 95 it reinstalled that at which point I upgraded it again with my Windows 98 CD. During certain applications (seems to only be applications that have graphics or sounds involved) I get the following message "a fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C1507DC9 in VXD VMWAUDIO(01) + 000031C9. The current application will be terminated. This happens in more than 1 application, can you give me any guidence on what might be going wrong?

Try installing updated drivers for the sound card. Do you know which sound card is in it?

Sounds like it doesn't like the sound card driver. Is that an Acer 98 CD for your system? If it's not, it probably doesn't have the right drivers for your devices on it. So I would advise you to restore it to the 95 operating system. Sorry about that. That is one of the reasons why many of us here buy or build clones. So we can upgrade with what we want to put into the system.
I am using the drivers that came on the ACER CD and it worked with Windows 98 before, I restored the system to it's original configuration (windows 95) and reapplied the windows 98 upgrade and now am having the problem, but it worked for almost a year with windows 98

Did you use the 98 Beta version a year ago? Some devices, within 98, will work with 95 drivers. Others do not. But if you upgraded Direct X, etc., then that will change your drivers. Then possibly they won't work. Then maybe some of your hardware devices are starting to fail. I don't know at this point.
Without seeing it, I really can't offer much more insight into it. Sorry.

It sounds like it may be a Version Conflict Manager problem. Whenever you reinstall WIN98, it replaces files and sometimes they are incorrect versions of the files.
Right now I have at least a dozen I have to fix http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
Go to Accessories/System Tools/Sys Info, then tools/VCM and see if there are a bunch of files listed there.
The biggest problem you may have is determining which of these files is the culprit. What I usually do is restore all of them, anyway...
If that doesn't help, you may need to open your case and get a model number off the card itself and get a driver if possible.

this error occur on an Acer computer with
earlier versions of IBM Mwave sound card drivers.
to resolve this problem download the latest driver for the Mwave sound card
Hey all, this message will apply to all of you having those unpredictable blue screens of death:
Windows98 for some reason unknown except to Mr. Gates doesn't extract certain drivers when you install Win98. There are seven of them to be exact. To check for this problem, go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager
Open something like Floppy Controllers, and click on properties then on driver details.
You should see something like C:\windows\system\ followed by a driver assignment. If you see a driver in parenthesis next to it, that is the driver that windows wants to use, but can't because it wasn't extracted from the disk. Instead it reverts back to an old vmm32.vxd type driver. Following is a list of the 7 files that need to be extracted:
vmouse.vxd
ntkern.vxd
vcomm.vxd
vdd.vxd
vflatd.vxd
configmg.vxd
vdmad.vxd
Write those down, then get your Win98 CD. Browse the CD, and in CABS 47 & 48, you will find each of these drivers. Right click on the driver file and extract first to C:\Windows\System then extract again to C:\Windows\System\VMM32
Do this to all seven files and then restart windows. This should fix most unpredictable crashes you get.
Hope this helps all. Thanks to Junior for the info on a previous post. I then did some homework, and BAM fixed all of my problems just when I was getting ready to pull my last few hairs on my head out. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

VERY interesting MrEd! I just did a 'Find' and none of those drivers are installed.
Altho I must be lucky and not have anything that uses those drivers, still very informative nonetheless. I have printed out for future reference (if/when I start getting those crashes).

MrEd is right. I haven't been getting any crashes at all, but I'm doing it anyway. There is a quicker way of extracting the files to the correct directory though. Just go to "Run" and type SFC and hit enter. This should open the "System File Checker". Click on the option "Extract one file from installation disk". In the box type the name of the file you want, it will ask for the path to the Windows98 cd. It should have the proper directory already set. Just hit ok and it's done. For such a easy way of doing it, I really made it seem long. I'm just a littled detailed with my instructions I guess.
Socialgal: There are several things in your device manager that will want to use the new drivers, but if you're not having any problems, "let sleeping dogs lie" so to speak. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks plaster, never thought of extracting like that. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Maxtor HD caused me lots of problem's with newer motherboards.when I try to copy cd to hardrive system would lock up Lights would stay on but I had to reboot. Some Screen savers would lock up Plus 98 mainly. This is a FIC motherboard 6.8 maxtor HD.64mb cas 2 pc 100 memory; matrox G200 video /16 mb sdram 32 speed toshiba cd-rom. I replaced maxtor HD with 6.4 western digital HD. No more problem's. I sent back a matsonic 6062S mother board that probably didn't have anything wrong with it but the HD Thanks Mr.Ed I checked 3 different computers & they all were missing the vxd files

I finally ran into a problem with VXDs with a new motherboard here. I am going to give this idea a shot. I'm not having any problem other than my software DVD player crashes the system. This even after a clean win98 install. I almost miss my VA-503+. Less problems than this Abit board. ;P

Well, that was not the problem. I guess I'll continue looking. I did however fix this vxd "problem" with this information, so why not resurrect this thread? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
