Another one of those reasons to wait for the game to come out before you upgrade to play it.

It's relatively easy to solve.
First step is to back off overclocking the core (about 10Mhz should do) and you definitley want to disable Fast Writes (no performance boost and seriously upset Doom 3).
That should solve it for most people, beyond that try disabling overclocking on the GPU core alltogether and beefing up cooling to the card (usual house fan rules apply) and finally reduce AGP to 4x (again, you wont notice a performance drop).
To clarify some "urban myths" flying about, this isnt a driver bug (according to the Beta testers i know at least - Terry M has yet to say anything) ), game bug, card fault and is not the mark of a pirated game.
As John Carmack stated this game will test your card unlike any other and as such may make your previous overclock unstable (try using Radlinker to create a custom clock speed for Doom III only and continue using your existing overclock for all other apps), similarly any cards that are poorly cooled will feel the stress too.
Adjusting your overclocking options, improving your cooling and of great importance - disabling fastwrites, should clear this up.

P.S. on another note some are experiencing wierd texture issues, this has been attributed to people using "high detail" settings in game but setting the ATi Control Panel slider to "Performance", adjusting it to Quality should correct this.

Ugh. Underclocking... Steve R Jones should be kicking off accounts for using that curse word.......:D
Just joshing Steve-O
Who buys a top rated card for top dollar, so that they can underclock it?
But for the rest of you out there, at least there might be a solution for you.
Careful not to fry your cards :x

All I can say is that i've got my 9800Pro running Doom3 at 420/380 which is above what the 9800XT runs at and i've got no problems with the game. I picked the game up today at just past 10am, got home around 10:30, started playing at 11pm, and have been playing since and its now 1:15 (game still running, i'm on my laptop now) So over 2 hours for me on my OCed card with no problems. I've also got fastwrites enabled.
I do have the Arctic Cooler and ramsinks however.
Oh, and if anyone is wondering. I'm running the game at 1024x768 on HIGH quality with 2xAA selected in game, and 4xAF in the display properties. My FPS is anywhere from 20-40 depending on whats going on. Nice thing about it is that the game is pretty scary, so you tend to move around very cautiously and slowly, so the dips below 30 are many times unnoticed. However I am anxiously awaiting the Catalyst 4.8 drivers which are said to significantly improve OpenGL performance.
Thinking about dropping down to 2xAF until the 4.8's are out.
Oh, and im running a Barton 2600+@2.3GHz and 1GB ram.

edit: and Raymon, suggestions are that you drop FSAA and instead up the resolution for a better effect, FYI. :t
