Well, I know you can get at least 256 colors with the SVGA server using some drivers that are close to your chipset - your chipset driver may even be in there already. Have you tried running xf86config?
Try this: sign on as root,at the prompt# cd /usr/X11R6/bin now at the prompt# xf86config (hit enter)now carefully follow the instructions to configure your video card/display. After you are done run startx and check it out - if your display is unreadable hit "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace" to back out and run xf86config again. If startx fails to start the xserver then run xf86config again.
Or better yet - toss that "Win3.1-version-of-linux" and spend $49 on Caldera Open Linux 2.2; your video card will be configured as you install and it will also be the best $49 worth of software you ever spend.

I've tried Xconfigurator and it doesn't list the card or chipset and it doesn't seem to like the video ram.
Ok i've got the drivers three rpm files now what? How do i install it?I'f it's going to take a while to explain don't worry as a friend offered to show me how to do it in about 2 weeks. And i'm new to linux in case you didn't notice http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I'm less then a newbie. I'm still researching what Distro will be compatable with the hardware
that I have.
Red Hat Linux doesnt seem to support the Banchee but the files on that page(as best as I can understand) should work for Red Hat as well as Caldera Open Linux. I got the links From Caldera web page.

I'm using a TNT on one system and an ATI Expert 98 on the other system. Both cards work excelent and were auto-detected on install of Caldera's Open Linux 2.2, I only had to do probing for the clock and testing of the video modes.
I have utilities to manage software installation so i almost never have to do any command line to install things - a few times I have. Don't you have a software management utility or something with 5.2? I think to install RPMs all you have to do is cd to the directory where the package is and type "rpm 3dfx.rpm" or something like that. BTW, the 3DFX RPM came on my install CD, but I do not think it installed automatically since it is in a separate directory than the other xservers. Perhaps the driver is still experimental.
Three things always help:
man pages; READMEs; and HOWTOs

This will answer your question: www.trail.com/~popeye/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000129.html (http://www.trail.com/~popeye/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000129.html)
Better check this also: http://www.trail.com/~popeye/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000128.html
To sum it up, create a directory in Linux where you want to view the Windows files, this will be your "mount point" call it say "/Win98" and assuming that your Windows is installed on /dev/hda1 (device hard disk1 1st partition) this is what you would put on the command line:
"mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /Win98
If you make edit /etc/fstab and add your Windows partition it should mount at boot time.
Caldera's Linux has a tool called "lisa" with which you can do many things including adding entries to the mount table.
BTW, Caldera's OpneLINUX 2.2 is on sale at FRY's Electronics (here in So. Cal) this Memorial Day weekend for $28.95 (after $10 mail in rebate). This is such a slick and polished set of software - it would cost $1000+ if it came from MS.
