Before installing extra software (IE Explorer 5, Office97 with SR2 & patches, Norton Antivirus)on to preload HP Pavilion Celeron 366 the PC would automatically power down on shutdown. Now we get the "It is safe to shut down your computer" screen and the PC will not power off. The power button only turns on the system not off. The Phoenix bios was not changed and in any case has nothing relating to this.
Power management has nothing either. Windows help also says nothing about this.
What in Windows98 controls this feature & how can it be re-enabled?

Check your Norton config. Might be somethimg as simple as disable "scan fd on shutdown". http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

go into the power icon in control panel and disable windows APM.

and/or you may have to disable norton anti-virus inorder to get that auto shutoff feature..

You've probably aready tried this, but on my case, you have to hold down the power button for a good 5 seconds or so before it powers down, and if you don't keep in held down while powering off, it just restarts. Kinda buggy if you ask me.

MrEd the new motherboards are designed that way.. it goes to sleep mode or resets on the first push.. but if held down for 5 seconds it powers off.. but if your system hangs on waiting for windows to shut down then do what I told you.. but if you want it to turn off automatically... then make sure the APM in the BIOS is enabled and do what I told you on the previous post again. which is disable apm and disable anti-virus software
