I recently reinstalled Windows 98. Before configuring Internet Explorer, I upgraded it to IE 5. This means that I never used IE 4. Now, for some reason, I can't connect to,or download from FTP sites. Before I reinstalled Windows, the FTP in IE 5 worked like a charm. I can connect using CuteFTP and download the files I want, but it takes longer and I shouldn't need to do this. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this weird little problem? Thanks

Have you updated EI5's browser enhancements to work with internet FTP folders and files. I'm not certain if this is the fix.

Reinstalling Win98 over an existing copy isn't recommended. You did a clean install, correct? Upgrading EI4 to 5, without first configuring 4, wouldn't be the problem. This works fine.

It was a clean install to a point. I renamed the Windows directory, then re-installed. I don't believe that I removed IE5 before I reinstalled.

Open IE5, go to tools, internet options, advanced, place a check mark in "use web based ftp" click on ok. That should do it.

Sometimes we miss the simplest things.

This option is unchecked on my system, however, I have no problem downloading from FTP's.

It will be of interest to see if this helps.

You know, I have had the same problem and this actually did fix it. I didn't really spend much time trying to figure it out. I have planning a slash-and-burn on my PC since I have a new board coming so I just installed Gozilla and forgot about it. Interesting...

I tried the "Web based FTP" thing before I posted. The problem was that I didn't remove IE5 before renamend the Windows folder and installing Windows fresh. I really only installed windows like that, because my Monster 3D quit working. So I renamed Program Files and Windows and reinstalled. Works now, even with the web based ftp unchecked. Thanks for the suggestions. You got it right BE.
