Do compaq presarios only take compaq memory. I need to upgrade my memory on my compaq, and my manual says only Compaq memory? Is this just a scam by compaq to boosts sales or what. Can you use SDRAM on compaqs, etc..

You can use any brand which meets your system requirements.

If you have any documentation, the info might be in there, or at their website. It really depends on your system what type of ram is needed - it could be SDRAM, EDO or Fast Page. Check to be sure. Susan
Yes, Compaqs can only take Compaq RAM. It is a different size. Yes, it is a ripoff scam for them to make more money, because now you have no choice but to buy from them...and at a ripoff price. This is why people should not buy computers from "name brand" manufactures.

A good friend's OLD Compaq just uses regular 72pin SIMMs- Do the newer Compaqs in fact use an odd size memory module??
Here is a link where you can find alternative memory to Compaq specific www.crucial.com (http://www.crucial.com)
I did a little research, picking a middle of the road Presario #4840, a PentiumII -266 desktop that by every search I did seems to take standard comercially available memory - although I could not ascertain this from Compaq's website - I guess some Compaqs must do use a different size memory module. Anyway, I must agree with the previous post on one point - it is better not to buy "name-brand" computers.

JP,
I think the proprietary companies are getting a little better when it comes to being able to upgrade the systems. My neighbor has a Packard Hell that takes generic EDO, and my sister's Micron take's it too.
I bet these companies had alot of upset customers in the past (as well as overwhelming tech support)and they decided to change their ways. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I have Compaq Presario 4640. Upgraded the RAM from 48mb to 96mb with Standard PNY 60ns SDRAM. Also upgraded CPU from PII-266 to PII-333, and added zip drive. Tedious work in small tower, but I found all information about upgradability and jumpers I needed on their website. Regards
Aparently, some compaqs do take propriatary RAM. Tantone, I got my info by a guy that sells nothing but RAM.

JP,
I disagree. I recently added some cheap generic RAM into my dad's Presario, which is an old P166 that still had 24MB in it. I added 2 16MB sticks and it took it without a hitch. Where do you get your info from?
Well i had a presario 9642,it took only 70ns
or better 72 pin simms, but they had to be the same brand and in pairs or they would not work.
