Broadband Router

I need a broadband router. Im tired of taking the modem from one computer to the other. The computesr both have ethernet cards in their mobos, but they are too far away from each other for just some cable to connect the two. anyway i want more potential i want for my sister and dad to connect their laptops to the router when they bring them home so it will need to be wireless.

ive seen so many router that my mind is boggling, has anybody seen any good ones, within a reasonable price ill let you decide what reasonable is though ;)

Moved to Networking forum.

Netgear, Dlink or Linksys would be good. No matter which brand you choose, stick with the same brand of nics also. For the systems with ethernet, you could either replace their nics with wireless cards or get ethernet bridges. Get at least 802.11G products.

the ethernet cards came with integrated to the mobo so they are permanant. there is just so much choice. sorry about using the wrong forum :(

has anybody used one yet and success, im new to networking.

i wanted to know if there are any routers which support file sharing as well or will i need a hub for that?

ethernet bridges are used to connect wired devices to a wireless network. you can even hook up a switch to the ethernet bridge.

it's hard to recommend anything when you don't have a $$ range. 802.11G hardware is more expensive, but it is faster.

all the SOHO routers support file sharing. not sure what you mean by that. if they're networked then there's some way to share files. if you mean if there is a built in switch, then yes most SOHO routers have at least a 4 port switch built-in.

I think you need to do some research on wireless networks before you just jump in.

a budget of about £100 including a NIC card for each computer (just 2 at the moment.)

its just only some routers advertise file sharing so i thought all of them didnt.

I'm not good with conversion, but I think that's like $150 or so. Pretty tight budget. Dlink and Netgear would be cheaper.

do your laptops already have wireless nics? sounds like you need to connect one desktop directly to the router and have the other one connected wirelessly. is that right? if you already have wireless laptop nics, then you would just need the router and 1 ethernet bridge.

the laptop are a bit aged now so they have got wireless NIC, im not even sure if they have NICS!!

you'll have to price around for 2 wireless pc card nics, 1 ethernet bridge, and 1 wireless router/switch. I would look for dlink or netgear in your price range. you might have to drop down to 802.11B. 802.11B is fine for internet speed, but it's kinda slow when transferring files between computers.

how are you going to connect your second desktop then? are you going to buy a wireless pci nic for it? you can do that and just disable the onboard ethernet.

Yes.
Desktops require a PCI Wireles card.

This wireless router is perfect...but it comes with a PCMCIA card. That's what you use in Notebooks/laptops.

you can either get a pci wireless card or the ethernet bridge and use the existing onboard nic.

the link you provided was for a wireless router and a NOTEBOOK wireless card.

You need to buy PCI WIRELESS cards for your desktops you wish to connect.

If the company will substitue a PCMCIA card for a PCI card, then...you'll still need a second PCI card for the other desktop....

wait a minute. just to clarify the situation. please confirm porsch.

desktop1 will connect by cable to the router.

desktop2 will be wireless. you can use either a wireless pci nic or an ethernet bridge + the onboard nic.

2 laptops will need a pc card wireless nic each.

I haven't seen any bundles with a pci nic and a router. it has always been a pc card + router.

just price them out separately.

no ive got a DSL modem so i guess not.

right its all decided now.

this is the card i am getting. if you see at the top right there is a buy both option for £71.47. that is the router i will get. i dont know what the difference between this one and the last one i posted is except price.


what do you think will it be alright. i want a minimal loss of speed/signal if you know what i mean.

You aren't going to download or upload any faster with b or g series.

You're already past the limit there....

But...you can transfer files over the network, from one PC to the next quicker with G.

That being said...it all depends on the structure where you live, and how far apart the PCs are from the Access Point...

That will determine your overall speed/loss.

Porsch...I'm confused.
We're telling you to buy a G...then, tell you need a PCI card.

Fact of the matter...unless you're tranferring files over the network, b or g...don't matter.

G is the latest standard, and...it does have better security. Needed? Up to you...

You're gonna have to make some decisions on your own now...for exactly what you need...

the comment you made implyed that the new router i posted was a B not a G i was just making sure it was a G. nobody is obliged to help at the forum so you dont need to if you dont want to.

i know what i want but it is you who is confusing me by telling me differences between Gs and Bs when i never asked for them!

i just gave some links to see what you guys thought, the decision is of course mine in the end. i just dont want to jump into something im not sure about and end up regretting it.

Both things you've posted here are G series...

Both NICs and Routers MK's are G...

oh well plan abandoned anyway. thanx for all your help...even dajogejr. im going to change ISP before i get the network up and running. AOL doesnt support many routers. they give a list of recomended ones and they are all Bs or wireless and **** in general and i dont want to risk it and buy this one and it doesnt work. i dont know why we dont change ISPs AOL is **** ive decided. my Brother got hacked the other day and spam mail was sent from his account to about 500 people. they blocked the account understandable but we got it unblocked. so why do they have to block it everyday now!!! up yours aol i hate you!

If your brother's PC is up to date and protected by antivirus..I doubt he got hacked.

But...since AOL is a huge email provider, there is a great chance his email address was spoofed...causing it to look like it was coming from him, even if it wasn't.

That said...I agree...dump AOL.

Find a good DSL or cable provider, go from there....

we are with AOL because the DSLis the cheapest we can find now. wasnt when we first got it but is now. 1Mb is only £29.99 per month. that only really means anything, but apparently im too far away from the connection box to get it, but i can get 576 DSL how strange?!?!?


ill go with BT though. wont mean anything to you because you are in america.:p
