I just did a clean install of win98 on an AMD K6-2/266 with amptron pm9900 mobo, now when I go to restart the pc I get an error message that states:
Type the name of the command interpretter (e.g., C:\windows\command.com) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
Then when I try to type the path and enter the same line appears, over and over each time I try.
Any ideas???

Are you overclocking? Could be corrupt files causing that error. I've heard of many more exotic errors caused due to OC dammage.

Otherwise, try to re-install again, this time low level format(fdisk) before installing if you haven't already done so. Make sure you have a disk with format.com on it if you do this.

If that doesn't help, then there's not much else I can tell you. That is a really weird error.

I did a low level format before I started, I am still messing with this thing as I type this. I am not o/c yet, I planned on doing some minor bumping once I got the operating system installed (300 mhz) I have just wrote zeros to the drive and am doing another fdisk and will format and try again soon.

Run scandisk on that hard drive. You might have damage in the boot sector.

What size and brand is the hard drive?

You are missing command.com on your hard drive.Use a good startup disk.Format c:/q/s This will copy system files onto the hard drive. Reboot. You should see a windows start up screen, then the dos prompt. Are you using a "factory" Win 98 boot disk? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

sys c: from a startup disk..

Jin Vitas~Yes, that would be the prudent place to start...If it won't take the sys files, then format...

Thanks to all who have replied, the drive is on it's way back to Western Digital today, It had some non-repairable errors that are covered under warranty. I did use a clean win98 boot disk, it was only when I tried WD's WD_DIAG program to try and write zeros to the drive that I found it had errors.

Thanks Again!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
