hi everyone,

i'm having a little trouble getting my *old* pci video card (trident providia 9685) to work with my computer. it worked fine on my old socket7 motherboard with cyrix 333 cpu, but now i'm having trouble. after upgrading my system by installing a new motherboard (abit bx6-2) and processor (intel celeron 366 retail), i booted it up and things seemed ok until i made it into windows. after windows98 detected the card, it recognized it as the "Trident 9685/9680/9682/9285/9382/9385-1 PCI" and then it installed the drivers for it. so far so good, right? unfortunately, no. after rebooting, i entered windows98 again and thought all was well. but as soon as i clicked the "start" button, the computer completely locked up. i gave it a hard boot and tried again, and it kept happening. i found that if i don't do anything (such as try to go to windows explorer, open up a program, or go to system properties), it won't lock up. but if i do, it will just lock up immediately. i even removed all pci/agp/isa cards except my trident card, but it still kept locking up! then, to make sure that the problem really was with the video card, i took out my old trident card, put in my brother's riva 128 agp card, and it worked with no problems! however, i would like to keep using my old trident if possible... is there anyway to get it to work with the motherboard? i've honestly ran out of ideas! please help if you can. thanks in advance!

btw, my system specs are as follows:
abit bx6-2 motherboard
intel celeron 366 retail
trident providia 9685 pci
windows 98
64 mb pc-100 sdram
seagate medalist 8420 (st38420a) 8.4 gig hard drive

p.s. i also tried out the latest video drivers directly from the trident homepage, but my system is still locking up...

I really have no experience with AGP mobos - but I just wondered: is there a way of enabling/disabling AGP in the BIOS? If so, maybe try disabling AGP. Just a thought . . .

Some Bios' have the selection for AGP/PCI as primary video device. On the BX6, this opyion may not exist.

Since you have this board, I wouldn't be too far off to assume you may be overclocking? The FSB setting may be to fast for this PCI device to handle.

Sounds like W98 is installing the wrong driver. Boot into safe mode and try to force feed the driver you used previously, the one that came with the card.

Drivers can be strange things. Recently I resolved problems on two older systems using ATI 4MB 3DRage vid cards - the problem was that in some games the 3D images had black blocks around them; old 4.x drivers came with the cards, and the latest drivers didn't work either, but I found the 5.11 drivers on the ATI site worked just fine.

The driver can make all the difference.

davidx --> i looked through the bios but didn't find an option to disable agp

bleeding edge --> that is exactly what i thought in the beginning. that the fsb is too high for my old, worn-out card to keep up with. is that possible? but anyway, it was locking up even before i began overclocking. i set it at the lowest setting (5.5 x 66mhz) using my celeron366 but i had the same lock-up problems. needless to say, the problems were still there when i overclocked it (5.5 x 83mhz).

cmonster --> there was no driver that came with the card, unfortunately.. this is because it was part of a complete system that i bought. now i know better not to do so! i've experimented with different drivers, such as "trident super vga", "standard vga", and "super vga", but all had the same problem.

however, after messing around with it, i discovered something. i have found that whenever it's in 16 color mode, it won't lock up at all! but as soon as i switch that display over to 256 colors or more, then it will begin locking up like before.

I had a horrible time setting up a Trident 9440 on an old P75. I found the answers there. Apparently some of these older Trident cards (Especially my 9440) are a real pain in the **** to install. Your card is listed as well. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Is this vid card in the slot next to your agp slot?or is it in a shared slot with an isa?If so move it down 1 from the agp or take it off the shared pci/isa slot.
