I don't know what happened, but I was pokin' around in the DX Diagnostic Tool, and when I opened it, I got the following lovely dialogue:

Could not get extra DirectMusic info., result code = 0x80040154 (unknown error)

Lo-and-behold, I go to the Music tab, and it says No DirectMusic ports were found, under the Notes pane. Hmmm... What gives? It USED to work fine. I even had DX 6.1 installed, or so I thought...

I went to the Microsoft Update site, and hit the "Show Installed Components" button. Welp, according to the site, while the items I'd installed previously showed up as being installed, DirectX 6.1 Technology Update DIDN'T show up as being installed. Hmmm... Anyhow, I checked the box, and hit Download. It started the download, finished, installed, and I was greeted with a box saying that the download and installation were both successful. Then I rebooted.

STILL got the same error with the DX Diag Tool. WTF? Now, under the DX files section, dmusic.dll is there (both actually - 16- and 32-bit versions), so I'm a bit stumped. And get this: I went back to the Update site, hit "Show Installed Updates," and would ya' believe it (well, I guess you would), NO DX 6.1! AHHH! ****, what gives? I tried it again, and it did the same thing: same error with direct music, and the site STILL says I don't have it installed. I also, tried deleting my IE5 cache and refreshing - still said I didn't have it installed. grrr... Tried installing DX 6.1 off a CD I found, too. No luck....

Funny thing, too.... 3DMark99 Max runs fine (which I believe requires DX 6.1?). On the other hand, DX Diag Tool says DX Version: DirectX 6 (4.06.00.0318) while the actual DX Diag Tool version # reads 4.06.02.0436? Is that normal? Hmmm... Also, I THINK Shogo uses DirectMusic, and the music used to work, but now I can't turn it on. *sigh*

I tried re-installing the drivers and updates for my sound card, which is a Creative Labs' Ensoniq Audio PCI (no smart remarks... it works and cost me $15... heh....). Still nothing....

Another item to note - under the Input tab in DX Diag Tool, it says no input items detected, yet I've got my MS Sidewinder Game Pad plugged in, and its status is OK under the Game Controllers applet in the Control Panel. HUH? Hell, it hasn't fail to work in NFSIII or Superbike, so... I don't get it.

I'm trying to get things straightened out without a format C:/s (which it could use anyway, I suppose...). If anyone can give me any feedback on this, I'd really truly appreciate it. Thanks.

You may not be able to get rid of these errors without doing a clean install of Windows.

There is a way to reinstall DirectX 6.1 and replace all the files but I think you'll still get these errors.

Here's how:

1. Download the DX6.1 .exe file, to your desktop from http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wuother/directxfoundation/default.asp Note: this file is for Win95 and 98.

2. Right click the file to create a shortcut.

3. Right click the Shortcut to select it's properties.

4. In the Taget bar: Press the End key to bring the cursor to the end of the line; Press the spacebar and type the following: /c /t:c:\windows\temp\directx

5. Click OK.

6. Double click the shortcut.

7. Go to your Temp folder and double-click the Dxsetup.exe file. You'll find an option to reinstall.

8. Click Reinstall.
