Router, switch ???

I have an accountant friend who has two computers XP and 98 on cable. She is concerned about security for her client files, which will be on the XP machine.

She wants both computers to be able to access the net but not necessarily at the same time.

She only wants her business computer to be on the net to upload and download tax info.

Her main concern is the security of her client files.

Is a router safer than a switch?

She doesn't care if she has to manually connect her business computer to the net when she needs to upload or download something.

What's her most secure way to set up her computers?

Hope I made some kind of sense.

Got a suggestion to disable the NIC card on the "business" computer when not in use.

Would that make it 100% secure?

The router is definitely more secure than a plain switch.

Then add a software firewall. even the built in winxp firewall would be better than nothing.

Keep the antivirus and antispyware programs updated. you don't to get infected with a trojan or virus.

See the antivirus thread in either Tech support or Apps forums.

I have a client of mine who is in fact a mom and pop tax business.

They have DSL...hooked from a D Link Router.

Installed Corporate version of Norton AV for them.

Auto Windows Update, and Free Personal Sygate software firewall.

No issues...3 PCs and 1 file/application server.

They are very, very happy.
