Your opinon please. What do think the next five years hold for the future of the home processors. Will Intel stay with the slot one ? Could they change their focus to the 370 socket. I would like to put together a new computer with a 100mhz bus soon. I just want a computer that I can upgrade later, not have to replace. Thanks Jayzad
Slot1 is gone for sure by the end of the year. When coppenmine comes out (I belive at 600MHz) they will move to a yet to be told socket version. S370? Maybe, but that doesn't matter if you want to upgrade from it. This is because coppermine will be using the camino chipset, so you'll need another motherboard anyway. But celerons, even the next generation of them, should be around for awhile in the s370 configuration. As for upgrading the same system for the next 5 years....I don't think intel knows exactly what will be going on in 5 years.
I can imagine a cross between the Celeron and P3 using both 128K full speed unified on chip L2 cache ram and 512K L2 on the PCB, running at 1Ghz plus, just to keep an advantage over the AMD chips. Intel has teh ability to market a 550/600Mhz version of this right now, so I don't think its too far fetched.

I new 5 years was pushing it. I hate to say this but I kind of long for the old 486 processor. At least back then if you bought a 486sx you could upgrade to several processors before you had to replace your mother board. With a Pentium 111 500mhz processor how or will you be able to upgrade it ? If you have one now will they sooner than later be telling people that most operating systems, business apps. and games are not written for P-111, or work well with it ? Does anyone have a link that might led me to more info about the future of the cpu. Thank you Jayzad

I doubt the slot will die a quick death in the next year. There will be some dragging of the feet and no doubt an overpriced P4 overdrive chip. So long as Intel doesn't wise up and change the chip's bus architecture significantly, Slot 1 will live for quite some time with the "slotket". Imagine, if someone took the time to adapter a PPro Socket 8 to a slot 1, a P3 would be electrically compatible with a PPro board. (well, not counting voltages http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif ) Reverse compatibility is there, it is just not exactly worth exploiting.
I have to say though, the future looks more and more like a socket. It just makes more sense as Intel moves back toward integrated on die caches more and more. It is cheaper to make, harder to remark, and retains the classic "computer chip" marketing look. We'll be seeing the SocketMine, and perhaps even SockCed before long. Intel can't have a product that looks remotely similar to what AMD is selling now can they? *cough*K7*cough*

I thought that someone DID make a slocket for using a PPro in a slot one. Or was it a PII that fit a PPro socket? I wonder if it's possible to upgrade the memory in my noggin? I forget everything too quickly http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif What was the question?
Yeah, isn't the k7 going to a slot 1 compatible config? I think I'm just gonna wait for the camino bomb to fall...I mean, we don't even know what kind of ram we'll be using. (rambus vs. ....the world) Much less what cpu interface config Intel deams is best for the common good (ha!) Slot types will be history eventully though. As far as intel is concered...they just won't make sense. It's more expensive to produce and un-nessisary when the cashe is intergrated. The hardware industry is turning into a chess match. Guess what pecies the customers are? (psssst, if you havn't guessed pawn...try again)

hell no! the K7 has 2 versions Slot A and Slot B
both are different ( b version is for dual processors) and they are both similar to slot1 but not even closely compatable.... the K7's bus is completely different...... ITS USING THE UPDATED EV-6 Alpha bus .......
PC's will become less and less compatible I believe.
Intel doesn't want anyone else using their architecture, AMD wants to be different, Mac doesn't want to use floppy's, aplha, well, etc...
It's a wonder a video card will fit more than one type of MB as it is!

"The K7 will fit in a Slot A, (A Slot similar to Slot 1, but using a different protocol to transfer data (EV6) and house the L2 cache in the cartridge like the Pentium II."

I would expect to see some kind of 'anti-slot' marketing out of Intel sooner or later. If AMD makes one, it can't be good ya know. I'm just waiting to hear the horror stories of people who stuck their K7 in a Slot 1 board or P3 in a Slot A board. From the rumors I've heard, they are pretty much using the same part on the board. It makes some sense. Why reinvent the wheel, but there are folks out there who will just slap in on in there. How many people have smoked a motherboard by putting in a 486 backwards?
