My viewsonic 19 inch crt a90 died on me. I'm looking for an lcd to replace it. Would a 17 inch lcd give me the same viewing area or do I need a 19 inch? What monitors would you recommend? Samsung seems to be popular these days. Thanks for any input

A 17" LCD is slightly smaller than a 19" CRT display size.
Samsung is pretty solid, but it's better to look for yourself. Some people are more sensitive to "ghosting" than others. I can see it, so I stuck with CRT. CRTs are way the heck cheaper too, which is nice when you blow your wad on a 6800GT. doh.

There are 18" LCDs. Knock an inch off the CRT dimension to compare to equivalent LCD viewing area.
The Hansol 750 is meant to be one of the best around.

Personaly I couldn't stand a moniter that wouldn't hit at least 1600x1200 resolution.. just makes a card like a GeForce 6800GT seem not worth it if you can't play Doom 3 @1600x1200 :D
I've got an older 17" CRT, and I love it. It's a little long, cause it's an older one, but if I were gonna buy another I'd go with a CRT for sure, just probably a 19" ViewSonic.
This is monitor to go with:
Mitsubishi Diamond 19” Pro 930SB, Mfr part #: 60000770
