Thanks for the look.
I have a win xp pro and a win 2k pro networked through a router. The 2k pro can file share with the xp, but not the other way around. The xp system sees the win 2k sys, but when i try access the system it asks for a user name and password. I have no passwords set up on the win 2k pro. I tried admin and password and neither worked.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

This is covered in the "Best of" Thread:

You need to set up the same user accounts on both systems. You need to have the same username and password on each system. This is how NT based OSes authenticate the users.

Welcome to Sysopt. :t
Thanks for your replies.
I am still having problems. Currently, both systems are in the same workgroup and each system has a common user name. Do I have to log on as the same user and password for each system everytime?

no, but they both need to have the same information in their SAM database. ie, if computer1 has JSmith, then computer2 would also need to have JSmith with the same password.
Thanks again, but I am still stuck. This is what I have done so far. I created the same user name and password in both the XP Pro and the 2000 Pro system. Under properties/security of the shared folder on the 2000 Pro system I have permission for everyone, and the common user name . From the XP system I still can not see the shared folder. I log onto the 2000 Pro system under a different user name since the shared folder is located on this desktop.
Before I added a common password and a common name to both systems I was able to click on entire network/2000 system and a window would appear asking for the user name and password. When I proceeded to enter the info the user window would just reappear. Now, I added the common password and I get an "access denied" error when selecting entire network/2000 system. In other words it never give me an option to even enter a user name or password.
Like I mentioned the XP system can see the 2000 system, but not the other way around.
Please help me out if possible. If there is any step by step tutorials out there please point me into the right direction.
Thanks

Like I mentioned the XP system can see the 2000 system, but not the other way around.
are you sure that the winxp firewall is disabled? do you have any other firewall software?
Midknyte,
I do not know what I was thinking when I wrote, "Like I mentioned the XP system can see the 2000 system, but not the other way around."
I meant to say that the XP system can see the 2000 system, but I can not access it. The 2000 system can access the XP system with no problems.
Sorry, for the confusion and thanks for being patient.

it really sounds like a permissions problem. make sure that both share and ntfs permissions are enabled for that account. the combination of share and ntfs permissions will yield the MOST restrictive of the two.
Can you tell me what ntfs is? Also, what is the difference between share and ntfs permissions.

ntfs is the NT file system, similar to FAT or FAT32.
you can set the "security" permissions on ntfs in xp. you can also set "shared" permissions on folders or files. this is basic networking stuff.
www.labmice.net should help you out with that.
