Ok im at the Dell website and i have a choice.
I can get eh Ati Radeon 9800 pro or the Ati Radeon x300 SE that is pci express I know that the 9800 clocks faster that the x300 but x300 is pci express and i wonder if it still would be better. If anyone knows how many pipelines an x300 has tell me because i saw somewhere that an x300 only has 4 pipelines almost comparing to my radeon 9200! The 9800 how ever has 8 pipelines. I dont know if i would benifit if i get the x300 but i get a pci express ready motherboard so please help me!

Get the 9800. The x300 is a budget card and slower than the regular 9600 AGP. Stay away, far away from the x300.

The X300 and the X600 are not good cards for gamers at all. The 9800 Pro by contrast is a decent gaming card and will be for some time, at a great price to match.

I second Radeon 9800, and PCI express is not even fast enough to talk about as a competitor to AGP. It's the same in some cases even slower.

what video card would you prefer if there is a budget of $300-400? and are any Nvidia cards that can stand a chance of ATi?

GeForce 6800 is a great competitor to ATI's cards right now. They both great. If i had 300 to 400 dollars to spend i would wait till the end of this year, so i can see how new GPUs from both companies will show your self. I think it's too early to buy video card right now.

If it's a must for to buy now, just go after the company that you like.

6800GT is a solid buy. Shader Model 3.0 support and overclockability push it ahead of the X800Pro.

At the 6800U and X800XT level, it's a toss up.

Tch, there's no toss up. nVidia all the way!

And the GeForce 6800 GT beats out the X800 Pro in 75% of benchmarks, and normaly beats it badly. And I know all this hype about flashing a X800 Pro VIVO card, but what people seem to forget is that you can OC a GeForce 6800 GT to faster-than-Ultra speeds and beat out the X800 Pro VIVO even with the full 16 pipelines. But if you want a budget card that's better than the R9800 Pro, try a GeForce 6800 Standard. They don't bench as high as a X800 Pro, but get much higher marks than the R9800 Pro and have next generation technology, so it's a good buy at about $290.

Oh, and too Vitalka, is there ever a good time to buy any computer companant? There will always be something better that comes out just around the corner. You can wait forever and ever until something comes out that has all the advancements that any game will ever need, but then all you're gonna do is lay off the fun that you could have gaming right now. You just buy the top card that you can afford and be happy with it.. it's not like in a year it's gonna be so out of date that it won't even run games. Just look at the R9800 Pro for that, it still runs the top end games with great framerates.

I have Radeon 9800 and very happy with it. But what i meant to say that new cards are just starting to take over, so i would wait till the end of this year and then buy one. Yes you right new technology is coming out every year and there is no way to catch up with it unless you loads of money, but there always.

And i bought Radeon 9800pro this spring after a price drop, so i got good card for my money. I just think that paying 300 to 400 dollars is insane.

Cheers mate :t

I agree that $300-$500 is a ton of money to spend on a graphics card, but when you're a hardcore gamer like me and have to have the eyecandy, it's worth saving up your money for :D
And the plus side to spending, say, $400 for a good card now is that you won't have to update for a while before your card becomes really out of date.
But like I said, the GeForce 6800 Standard doesn't have the high price tag as the other new cards ($290 on newegg.com), and it gets good preformance, and as an added bonus has PS3.0 support, so may end up aving even better preformance with Doom 3, HL2, ect. Plus if you get the eVGA GeForce 6800 from Newegg that I was talking about you get a free copy of FarCry, a nice bonus for those of you who don't already have it :D

wow i didnt know how the good the 6800 was until u guys explained it to me. Alot of my friends are in favor of ati but i might to Nvidia to **** them off. I had an Nvidia gf2 before and it worked great. It was reliable and the support from Nvidia was good. Since I got a Ati R9200 its been kind of buggy lately. I found a x800pro for $400 on ebay and a 6800gt for $400. I still dont know what to go 4 here are the links:

ATi: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5110346956&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

Nvidia: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=40161&item=5110852347&rd=1

I think ATi's a better buy because it clocks faster but u said that 6800Gt can b clocked to an Ultra. Also i want a card that can operate the new game that is going to come out in 2005 F.E.A.R. That game looks ~|GODLIKE|~

One option open is to get an X800 Pro VIVO, which can then be easily flashed to a fully fledged X800XT

On current evidence I'd go for a 6800GT - SM 3.0 plus more pipelines... assuming I was rich enough to spend that much cash on a single PC component :(
