Any suggestions for upgrading my video card on a 1994 / 486 pc? Has a cirrus logic 1 meg card now. Think it has gone bad. Looking for suggestions on a new one. ??????

I just checked on pricewatch for you for an ISA video card, MAN are they expensive.

They want $50 for a 1M card!

Do you have a VESA or ISA slot?

Yep! You gotta VESA. Check with your local computer builders/shops. Vesa is no longer popular, but a lot of shops still have cards they would like to get rid of . I picked up a 4meg(upgradable to 8meg) Orchid vesa card for $35.00. When those old Cirrus cards check out, they cause all sorts of weird graphics.... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Will a PCI card work. Seems like it would fit in the slot? It wouldn't be as long as the vesa card? But looks like it would fit into the front slots on the MB???
The reason I am replacing the card is I am having problems with the mouse icons disapearig and showing up as a wierd scrambled box. I have reloaded the mouse driver and reloaded the windows 98 mouse pointers. Still the same effect. Pointer looks like a scrambled tv.. also having problems with the desktop looking like it's stretched, icons etc. can't get the windows to open properly. Everything is huge and out of perportion???? tried deleting drivers to card and reloading ...no effect. everything just looks goofed up. ????

Nope,The vesa setup is an isa slot with the second slot ,the vesa support section. Sounds like you can use isa or vesa cards only. Unless that board also has pci slots. What flavor/model board? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I'm betting that there's absolutely nothing wrong with your video card! It sounds far more like a simple software problem to me.

You said "everything is huge and out of proportion". Like only part of your desktop is showing? But in giant size? Exactly the same thing inexplicably happened to me once in Win98. I suspect that your resolution/fonts or whatever under 'Settings' in 'Display Properties' have been accidentally changed, possibly by a program during installation. Fiddle round with them and see if you can get things back to normal. I bet that may well fix your mouse pointer problem too.

I may be wrong, but at least give it a try (even re-install Win98 if necessary - not just the mouse drivers) before you replace a video card which may be perfectly okay. So many problems that people automatically blame on hardware are actually due to software errors.

Hmmm . . . I read your most recent post under 'Strange Mouse Problem' and it looks like I lost my bet http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Sorry you tried re-installing Windows all to no avail - but I still think it was worth a shot. I guess your video card is failing after all. The resolution problem could have been software but I must admit that the mouse pointer problem has me stumped. I hope a new video card solves your woes.
