Have a strange problem with mouse pointers.
Every now and again the pointers will disapear and I get this "box",looks like a fuzzy tv screen? I have tried to install the drivers again, that works for about 2 start ups then after that the "box" comes back. Even got rid of the pointers and reloaded them from the 98 cd-rom again. same problem?
using windows 98
486/clocked at 120 meg.
cirrus logic video card
standard serial port mouse.
Help?

Either the video card is dying,or the drivers need changing. Win 98 likes to stick a generic driver in. Or,just try a different video card. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

i just got over that same problem myself.that monitog that pops up is the puter telling you that its working.if you press control-alt-delete once, a window will pop up find whats not supposed to be going on in your puter and fix it.its usually something easy...my problem was i can't leave a blank cdr in the cdrw.i push eject and it works fine.
i hope i helped a little or gave you some ideas to look for.
i'm assuming you're using the standard mouse pointers, right?
Standard mouse pointers and windows 98 drivers. have tried to use other drivers from another serial mouse. But still same result? Since it is an older pc. The mouse uses it's own card that plugs into the motherboard. Unlike the newer pc's in which the mouse plugs directly into the M.B. could it be that card or the video card. The video card is an old 1 meg cirrus logic.?

Is your mouse an old Bus type Mouse? Do you have a serial port in you motherboard?
I would guess it is a bus type? There is no port on the motherboard that the mouse directly plugs into. It uses what looks like a serial cabel to the motherboard???the mouse plugs into it. And the cable plugs into the M.B.
It's an old 486 AT&T. 94 model.
Not exactly sure why it has this design ???
other than to take up expansion slot space?

That's a serial mouse and running a cable from the serial connector on the mobo to a faceplate with port on the back of the PC casing is perfectly normal practice on standard (non-proprietary) AT boards of 486 and later vintage. (Earlier AT boards normally didn't have an on-board serial connector at all; instead the connector was typically on a Multi I/O board.) The faceplate shouldn't take up space where an expansion card could fit since these faceplates are usually situated at the end nearest the power supply where there aren't any expansion slots anyway.
See my further reply to this topic under your other post "Video card for 486".

Reformated pc...installed windows 95...still have same problem with mouse...keep getting a blurred box for a pointer. ?? guessing it could only be a video card problem?????
found a stb lightspeed 2 meg video card in another 486 pc for 20 bucks....figure I will go try that unless anyone has any further suggestions...I am lost at this.

Like I said - Time for a video card.Once those cirrus vesa cards get some age on them, they start acting up.I have had several with the fuzzy white block mouse pointer.. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Have you tried returning to normal clock speeds?
The processor is an Evergreen 486 upgrade.
standard upgrade. I didn't overclock the original processor. It has been this way for about a year or more...the mouse problem just occured recently.
