I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for the questions I'm about to ask, but I've had good luck here before, so I thought I'd give it a try. I also posted this question in General Discussion, hope that's OK.
I've been curious about Linux for some time now, so I recently bought a copy of the book "Linux Unleased" which includes a copy of RedHat 5.2 on CD. I partitioned by hard drive and installed it, but I evidently made a couple small errors in setting it up, but I have no idea how to correct them at this point.
First of all, I thought I'd set up LILO to boot Windows as default, but somehow it's booting to Linux instead, so I need to know what to do to correct that.
Also, in the installation, I selected the highest resolution and color settings offered, but I haven't been able to get the XWindows to load. I've done some more reading and found I need to get in and try some more conservative settings, but at this point, I'm totally clueless on how to achieve this. I've purchased several books on this, but most are written for individuals with SOME experience, which I don't have, so the instructions given are total Greek to me. I really need to get the Windows system up and going for this, since I think I'd pick this up a lot faster being able to visually see things.
Any help offered would be greatly appreciated, and if you respond, please be specific on how to proceed.
Thanks!

For your Xfree86 video problems try here:

http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/XFree86-Video-Timings-HOWTO.html

http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/XFree86-HOWTO.html

Try here for the LILO problem:

http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/mini/LILO.html

Hope that helps. Check the support section of www.redhat.com for more info. EVERYTHING partaining to Linux is there.

If you are using RH5.2 you are missing the revolution! RH6.0 or better yet get Caldera Openlinux 2.2 - it kicks Win98 in the @$$.

you wont be having many problems after that.
you can get RH5.2 to work well, but you will have to be downloading a lot of stuff to bring it up to date.

My suggestion may sound kind of rude but here goes: Put your cold beer or warm coffee on the RH5.2 CD while you are Installing Caldera OpenLinux2.2 - It's like getting $1000 worth of Microsoft stuff for $49.

~edit:
Now.. if I could just find an MPEG?AVI movie player and a photo suite I would probably sell all my MS stuff while it's still worth a few $$

I have to agree with CMonster.
RH 5.2 was nothing but a stepping stone to RH 6.0. I really regret that I bought it, I should've just waited 2 monthes for RH 6.0

Haven't tries OpenLinux 2.2, but I'm hearing great things about it.
