Cheers,

you're supposed to use share permissions and user accounts to get access. passwords on individual shares was for win9x. you need to add the username and password to the host system. then you assign share permissions to the drive/folder.

Sorry Midknyte, I wasnt clear.
The user account is configured on a 2003 Ent Server which also acts as a print server, primary domain controller, dns and dhcp servers.
User accounts are configured however, not all users log onto the domain to access printers so they have to access printers and shares by entering thier IDs when the OS prompts (XPH).
Windows is asking for user auth on connection to the server shares but a shared printer relies on the saved password and username from the "Connect to" dialogue. This is fine if XPH remembered the password.
It doesnt so to access the printers the user has to first access a share/the server to auth access before being able to communicate to a printer on that server.
So in a nutshell i cant connect to a printer without first manually establishing a user connection to the server.
BTW, i also tried mapping a drive to 'force' a connection but XPH was getting confused between client computer user accounts and server user accounts.

I believe you can join a Domian with XP home when you install, but not after. You could reinstall XP Home if this is an option.
You can also try bypassing the server for the printers by using TCP/IP printing. XP has built in support. You simply need to create the port and point the proper printer to it.
Your other option is to verify that the server has the same user account name and password as the local machine that tries to connect like Midknyte said. If a user changes their local password, the server will refuse the connection and prompt for authentication. This is by design.

this is a totally different question now. dang.
first of all, you're not supposed to use xp home clients with a domain controller. that's probably why you're running into trouble. you should really be using xp pro.
why wouldn't they be logging into the domain?
if the share is on a domain controller, it is a domain resource. thus they would need to logon to the domain. they need to somehow connect to the domain first. that's why your manual connection works. I'm guessing that microsoft prevents passwords from being saved for security reasons.
the obvious answer would be that if the user has to print, they must logon to the domain.
RR brings up a good point. just create a direct connection to the tcpip port of the printer.

You answer your own question there.
Even if the machine is part of an ad-hoc network and you connect to other machines on the network you dont get the remember password box regardless if there is a domain controller present or not.
Thanks for the help though guys.
