Greetings Sysopters,

What is the driver situation with an external USB dial-up modem such as this one?

It says on its page that even Windows 98 can install it with no problems

http://www.multitech.com/DOCUMENTS/Collateral/data_sheets/2031.asp

Quote: "The MultiModemUSB uses the Universal Serial Bus (USB) for the easiest modem installation available. Just plug it into a laptop or desktop USB port. Windows 98/Me/2000/XP does all the work automatically to detect and configure the modem. Plus, with USB, users never have to restart or change system settings when hot-swapping this modem with other USB devices."

And is it shown in the Device Manager in the same way as a standard modem is?

I wouldn't use a USB modem on a bet. PCI, baby! Besides, Multitech modems are far from high-quality.

Is this an excercise, Eric or does someone actually need help?

No, BPB, I was just confused by the driver, which is called a USB driver.

When you get a driver for a PCI modem it isn't called a PCI driver, so I thought that it was just a USB driver and that Windows somehow uses its built-in modem drivers with it.

They should just call the drivers by file names in the normal way instead of calling the drivers USB and FireWire drivers when you know that the device is a USB or Firewire device.

But I should have thought more about it.

The USB driver obviously drives the modem in the usual way and lists the modem in the Device Manager in the usual way.

Anyhow, thanks for the advice not to use a USB modem.
