Linux Knoppix (debian version) modem problem

I just installed Knoppix on a new computer - dual boot with Windows XP. When I query the modem it says that it cannot find the modem. Anybody have any ideas? I'm new to Linux. I read something that said I need to download Gnome. Could that be the problem? I am also not having any luck usine Wine to open my Windows programs. Any ideas on why this might not be working? It always says something like a failure 1 has occurred.

You have a learning curve ahead of you with Linux, bunch of forums devoted only to Linux problems.....

I have enough work at home keeping the kids' machines updated, etc. but other guys here know linux - maybe they can help but you should post the specific error you're getting.
