How do I upload a custom avatar? or do I need to have a certain amount of posts first?

You need around 50 or a 100 posts first to have an avatar but you won't get none in off topic doesn't count in here. When you contribute some help in other forums then you'll see a post count.

You can have a custom avatar after 130 posts:t

Basically after 150 post's you can u/l your own avatar.
