I just build a system as follows:

P4 2.8
Intel D865PERLL
ATI RADEON 9800PRO
200G Maxtor
Samsung DVD
Sony DVD RW
4x512MB ram
Win 2000 Pro.

The first time I assembled this system, I put it in a Antec Sonata case. System 2 zone on the mobo would overheat with the cpu running at about 40-50 percent utilization.

Thinking that the Antec case was not moving enough air, I switched to a Thermaltake Xaser III super tower. It has 7 fans, 2 of which I upgraded to 72 cfm models. It still has the overheating problem.

While running the prime test and maxing the cpu utilization. CPU is running in the low 60c range. Zone one is in the mid 40C range. Zone 2 will hit 55c in about 5 minutes. Room temperature is around 26c.

I have determined that zone 2 is between the cpu and the backplane were the regulators are. It appears that the air is not flowing in this area.

The only way I have figured to keep the temperature down is to build a duct that causes the exhust fans on the back of the case to draw from zone 2. This causes zone 2 to to run around 46c, cpu 58c, and zone 1 mid 40c range.

I was wandering if anyone else has had a problem like this and how they solved it or if it might be a flaw in my mobo.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Did you put any thermal paste on the hsf when you put it on?

yes I did.

My CPU runs about 47-49C after 3 hours of 100% utilization (video encoding). I normally sit at 32-35C at Idle.

My Specs:
INTEL D865PERL
P4 2.6 533 FSB
2x512 PC3200
nVidia GF4
Samsung CDRW
NEC DVDRW
Win XP Pro

I do not think it is a defect in your board as I have the same one. I have a case with 1 fan drawing air in at the bottom and two blowing out near the CPU. I have the Intel HSF that came with my CPU and anopther fan in my PSU. I have a Generic Case.

Are you sure the HSF is seated properly. I know I have not seated mine al the way on the first couple of attempts. The clips for the fan can become crooked and clip three of four posts but the levers still flip and make it seem tlike the CPU and HSF are in properly.

With my P875 I ended up installing a 120mm fan on the top of the case. The temps went down about 20 degrees F. I no longer hear any overtemp beeps.

Yes, my PS has a fan over the CPU, but even pushing 90 cfm through a Sunon fan and two 80mm Sunon exhaust fans it was not enough to cool it down. I have since switched to (2) 40 cfm 120mm fans. It is a LOT quieter. It runs at about 40 C. (About 98 F at idle and 126 F at full throttle (playing games)).

You have to make sure that the HSF (Heatsink/Fan) is correctly installed and that you did not use too much thermal compound in between! Make sure that airflow is not restricted internally by the data and power cables. Re-evaluate how things are internally and make corrections that are needed to improve internal airflow and that should lower the internal temperatures.
