I am trying to host my own website but i'm experiencing a few problems.

I have purchased domain names without hosting, and have set them to my ip address. I have installed XENEO WEB SERVER to host my site and configured it to the ip address & domain name.

It seems that everytime I try to connect to the site a gateway password appears and then - Server Error: 401 Unauthorized appears on the page.

I think that my router is causing the problem, but i'm unsure. The router is a Sparkcom ADSL Modem Router.

System - Amd 1700 XP CPU, 256 memory, 20gb, XP Pro O/S, 1mb broadband.

I would appreciate it, if anybody could give me a few tips, recommend a good but simple web hosting package, and/or how to configure this router to get rid of this password gateway.

Your router may be the problem. You've directed your domain name to your outside ip address, but it doesn't know where to go once it gets to the router. You probably have to set up a virtual server in your router to allow your internal ip address 192.168.?.? of your web server to get out. Log into your router via your browser and change this setting. Allow port 80 to be open on your webserver machine. If this doesn't work set up a demilitarized zone for your computer. Don't leave the DMZ open, but just use it to check if the router is the problem.

Hope this helps.:D

I've tried that without success.

I've also tried to connect just using a adsl modem (without a firewall) and i cannot get the web host and domain to connect.

Is there a better hosting software package out there? as xeneo is pathetic. An idiots guide for me would probably also be helpful.

Have you tried using IIS that comes with XP pro?

Have been trying that today, still cannot get anything to connect.

I still think that the router is the problem, as it's always the home gateway that pops up regardless of what settings I use.

But you said you bypassed the router and still had the problem. Did you hook your computer directly to your modem? You do have a static ip address, right?

Normal Server needs port 80 open through the Router, and software Firewall.

And hopefully you took care of the Internet DNS.

Thanks for all your help guys, now up and running on the net.

I left it for a few days and when I return I followed the advice logically regarding the router and Hey Presto it worked. (plus an easy & good server software helped also).

Don't get in trouble with your ISP, make sure it's okay to actually host your own server.

With comcast, it's not.

Thanks for the tip.

I've just read my my ISP's terms & conditions and luckily they don't mention it anywhere.
