I want to get a pair of Opteron 8xx chips
(max 8-way) to use *some* day in a quad board,
but to use right *now* in a dual board,
the Thunder K8W (S2885 / S2885ANRF).
I've seen eBay 8xx sellers claim that this works.
A Tyan-USA support-rep says it won't.
A Tyan-Taiwan rep says it will.
Maybe the USA guys are just giving me
the "party line", maybe to sell quad boards.
Why would an 8-way chip work in a quad board and
not in a dual board?

Could be - because of the extra HyperTransport link of the 8xx that's enabled but hanging loose, so to say.

I can assure you that the two ways work in single or dual boards or as singles on dual boards...

The AMD website says it works up to 8way so I think it does...provided the chipset supports it...Maybe Tyan hasn't enadled this yet...
