Hi Everyone ~

ok. maybe this was foolish, but i installed Win98 over win95c to see if i could get away without having to reformat/clean install.

So now the problem(s):

Win98 System Information shows IE4.04.72.3110,and IE Help>About shows same w/SP1, but i have installed IE4.01 SP1.

Linking to sites seems slower. On the web page, graphics do not load properly, i.e., they are chopped off/incomplete. Some pages freeze before completion.

Trying to perform Windows Update from Start Menu, after hitting Products Update, the page refuses to load. It freezes, causing me to Close Program.

P200mmx not o/c'd;
80mgs RAM - custom swap file set at min/max 120mgs; no [vcache] set;
Matrox Mystique 170mhz RAMDAC/4mgs;
USR 56k internal fax/modem;
Advance Power Management in Device Manager>System Devices is disabled (manually) due to conflict. No other conflicts in Device Manager;
DMA not enabled;
System Properties>Performance>Graphics>Full hardware acceleration;
Typical role of this computer: Network server.
Modem settings are correctly set; factory setting string and highest port speed.

Am I forgetting anything? prior to win98 this problem did not exist.

I sure hope this isn't going to be another reformat, tho i wouldn't be surprised since I tried to shortcut.

perhaps i should just try to reinstall IE4.01? or just go for broke and get IE5.0...

thanx in advance guys/gals

You may want to limit your [vcache]
so Windows does use to much Memory for
your Harddrive.

MS released SP2 for EI4 after releasing EI5.
Give it a try before moving onto EI5.

thanx for replies, Gorx, B.E.

Gorx - i am getting around to it - today!

B.E. - i am downloading as i write this; have sp2 on other puter and hadn't gotten to it yet.

I think I will wait on the IE5.0 for a bit - till I am feeling braver, and they find/fix more security leaks & bugs. Shouldn't they REALLY call it IE5.0 BETA? hmmm

IMHO I'd just move to IE5. Its a hell of a lot more stable than IE4 could even think of being.

As far as security holes, etc. IE anything was riddled with em, so basically you're in the same boat either way, just one doesn't crash as much as the other.

Well I took that plunge; downloaded (about 2 hrs on a 56k)and installed IE5.0 and was pleasantly surprised. No glitches in the download/installation; web pages DO seem to load noticeably faster than IE4.01sp2, even with the Radio feature running.(Brasilian radio is verrryy interesting lol)

I also made sure to download/install the security fixes from
www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/security/mshtml.asp (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/security/mshtml.asp)

now i just have to wait for Netscape5.0 LOL

Von - it does seem to not crash as much as previous v. - so far anyway!
