Greetings,
My son and I are buiding a PC. Components are: Fic pa 2013 motherboard, SB AWE sound card, Creative Labs Riva TNT graphics blaster.
Our problem is with Windows installation. We boot from a floppy and try to install from a CD. After entering the product key we get an error similar to the following:
SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module PIDGEN.DLL @ 0001:5F2C
The MS tech support database says that this is caused by an incorrect product code or incorrect time setting. I have entered that code so many times I know I have it right. Of course the time is correct. Could it be a hardware problem? Bios configuration? We are stumped. Any assistance would be appreciated.
By the way, we tried to install Win 95 and received a similar error.
Thanks,
J Bryant

What are you using for s7 cpu and memory?I would start off by rechecking the mainboard jumpers. If cpu settings or memory settings are wrong, this could explain your problem. Clear the cmos jumper on the mainboard and start over. Follow the instructions in your mainboard book.

There can be many reasons for this error message. Check the site below for;

run msdos and use the internal commands Date to set the date and time to set the time.. then do the install that should fix it.

I have recieved this error on two different occasions. The first time my system was overheating due to a bad processor. The other time, I needed to disable the virus protection in the bios. Just some food for thought

Was going to give the same advice as fishboy. Make sure your fan is running and that there is no space in between the heatsink and processor (once had this happen to me). If the fan works reinstall win98 and after it craps out, turn your computer off and pull off the cpu fan. Touch the processor, becareful it might be hot. It shouldn't be too hot unless it is an older amd 200's or 233's. Forgot exactly which amd it was that had heating problems. It was due to a high internal core voltage. If your processor is hot, go to radio shack and get some thermal grease. This will better disipate the heat to the heat sink. And if it is an older amd, get a bigger fan and heatsink.

Greetings,
Thanks to everyone who posted a reply to my post. To answer a few questions.
I am using an AMD K6-2 400 and a 64 meg PC 100 dimm.
The fan on my processor is running. It is a good ball bearing fan (at least that's what I was told by the folks who sold it to me) and a big heat sink.
Also, I disabled the BIOS virus protection with no success.
I will check the heat situation.
Is it possible that this error is part of an MS copy protection scheme? I don't see how since the OS is on a CD. Should I try just starting over with a DOS system disk and install Win 98 from there?
Thanks again,
J Bryant

Did you install the patch for that processor for use in 95? The link to it is at the site below.

have you even tried my suggestion?? Even though your win9x time is correct.. it doesnt mean the dos/system time is..boot from your startup disk.. and change the time and date on there.. and then.. install win9x..
Reason for that is because:
If you use a floppy disk with the incorrect date and time stamps to make
the hard disk bootable, the incorrect date and time stamps are reflected
on the system files copied to the hard disk. That is probably why you are getting the error.

Well John, I searched Technet for your specific problem and this is what I found. I guess vitas was on the right track.

For Junior & Jim,
I checked the date and it is correct. I may have to go into MS tech support limbo and ask them.
Thanks,
