AdamST 05-28-2004, 07:51 AM fast food and computers fishybawb 05-28-2004, 07:56 AM No exercise and a high sugar diet, same reasons we're having obesity problems with kids in the UK now. Things are going badly wrong when a 3 year old girl dies from heart failure due to her obesity :( alivin 05-28-2004, 08:39 AM I think the fact of American food being soo cheap has a lot to do with it. I was picking up some sushi from the only place in town, last night, which also is a really good chinese buffet. I eat there sometimes, $8.95 for all the sushi or steak or bbq ribs or fresh donuts......................... I can't help it I eat way too much but I'm lucky I do tile and carpentry, it helps work it off. Now I'm hungry :) werz 05-28-2004, 09:29 AM Why do we worry about terrorists from the middle east, the fast food terrorists here are gonna kill us soon enough. werz 05-28-2004, 09:29 AM and get rich doing it. rsfnatik 05-28-2004, 09:30 AM Originally posted by alivin I can't help it... This doesn't necessarily apply to you alvin, like you said, you have an active lifestyle that helps keep you trim. Doesn't mean it's healthy tho. :) But a lot people either believe or have convinced themselves that there is nothing they can do to be "fit", so they just continue lining up for fast food, snacking on the couch and living a lethargic lifestyle and pack on more weight all the while. Even if they acknowledge the problem most look for a magic little pill, some kind of powdered weight loss drink or a "diet" as a means of shedding a few pounds or going under the knife. Diet and exercise are all that's required... provided that you actually care and can find the motivation. In regards to the buffet's and "supersizing" of portions... people feel obligated to stuff themselves because of the "value". How much food one gets for their money has an impact that some people just can't refuse and they eat beyond their fill. People need to understand that the average diet these days is excessive in regard to nutrition and portion sizing. What's needed is a lifestyle change... a simple "diet" will not suffice. We eat too much and what we do eat is usually overprocessed/refinded, packed with sugar, fat and salt. Combine that with the fact that many people sit in a chair from 9-5/M-F and live the rest of their lives on the couch and you end up a level of obesity that has reached epidemic levels. Obesity is a problem in America, Canada and, as Fishy pointed out, in the UK. I'm seeing it in children more and more and it's sad... werz 05-28-2004, 10:06 AM how dare you brag like that, us Aussies are just as fat. sjd 05-28-2004, 10:20 AM Recently read an article about how the cost of treating obesity related health problems is projected to bypass smoking health costs. Can $6.00 Twinkies be that far off? Tech^salvager 05-28-2004, 10:59 AM I blame it on the fast food restruants espically Mcdonalds. But I eat from there to like their greasy double cheese burgers but I play DDR(Dance Dance Revolution) which helps work out my body. Hey I weigh 120lbs at 5feet 9inches' and I am a american that lives in the U.S.A. NJEnviroguy 05-28-2004, 11:05 AM :sigh: I know more people who are in good shape than out of shape people...and my mom's side of the family has several "obese" people in it. Why do so many people in the world eat food that is not "organically" grown and handled in ways that reduce the amount of chemicals introduced in them. I think if more people focussed on this than the whole obesity issue than we wouldn't have the latter as prevalent in most industrialized countries. mireland 05-28-2004, 11:27 AM Originally posted by RedStar Why are so many Americans so fat? hey hey now..I'm down to 320. I Now only eat TWO meals a day at Mcdonalds... rsfnatik 05-28-2004, 11:42 AM I know this is a bad movie to use an example... but love the whole Taco Bell thing in Demolition Man... the "franchise wars"... (yes, i'm sure there are better examples... but on Friday morning, this is the only one that's coming to me). Basically... Taco Bell became the *only* restaurant and anything unhealthy was banned for the good of the people, I hope it doesn't come to that tho. I like a big fat juicy steak like the rest of us... I just don't eat it every day of the week. :) Mmm.... steak... <insert Homer drooling here>. There may be some merit to your $6.00 Twinkie tho sjd... hitting people in the pocket may limit ones desire for these foods, tho I think there are other, more constructive motivators for living a healthy lifestyle. werz 05-28-2004, 12:39 PM you need a good dose of mad cows disease, like the Brits, It may put you off eating beef for a while. I was gonna remark about no one noticing any difference cos a fair % of the population may as well have it for the sense they make, but thats a bit cruel. I tell you what you come to America and say something like that to a overweight person and see what happens. Me being a overweight person myself does not apprecaite this thread at all. Being overweight is a disease and cannot be helped. I didn't start out being overweight I was a mere 135lbs. 10 years ago now I'm at 217lbs. why you ask because of stress kids and work and especially being married and it really doesn't help that there's a Mcdonald's right around the corner. herosrest 05-28-2004, 03:16 PM Don't talk. I'm getting closer to my goal of 200lbs. I was a fat 250 a year ago. Since I dumped soda and all sweets, I'm now down to 212. I had to, I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic last year. I feel better and look better too. You can lose it if you want or have to, cut out sugars, and get off yer backsides and move away from the computer. :t Go outside, you know, where the bright light is, and get some fresh air, even a walk will help.:D j.m@talk 05-28-2004, 06:09 PM Originally posted by Billforce Primarily because they CAN..........as an example, there are NO FAT PEOPLE in Cuba. The truely amsuing thing is, in the rest of the western world we're eating to the point of obesity. God, I love living in America. I'd rather have a gut from over eating than from worms anyday. You simply need to be more aware of your health and watch what you eat and eat it in moderation. I can say this because I've seen both sides of the scale. At 5'9" I've been up to 230 lbs. When I realized I was just using food the same way I used booze or drugs I came to the point of enough is enough. Now at 44 I have stopped giving into the media's constant barrage of food commercials for Dunking donuts, Pizza hut, Taco Bell, etc. Those companies know they are pandering to a eating addicted society and take full advantage of it. Do a little research into who owns some of the big fast food conglomerates and you'll find the same companies that made their fortunes selling alcohol and tobacco. Now I'm 168 lbs and work out and run everyday and have not ventured anywhere near mickey D's or Taco smell for some time. Oh yeah, and today makes 18 years clean and sober for me as well. And America is not the only overweight nation. Stop picking on us. Johnny Fist 05-28-2004, 09:02 PM Congrats on your 18 years! The guy that started this thread is only trying to stir up trouble. COLN 05-31-2004, 05:27 PM A little logic and portion control would end the obesity epidemic. In McD's the other day to buy my usual two senior coffees for only .52; the lady in front of me ordered that new healthy meal (salad and pedometer) Of course she added an order of fries, supersized and a dessert.
