My Hp pavilion was repaired locally under extended warranty and the CPU replaced. Original CPU was Cel. 566 and was replaced with a P3 667.
Problem is it only shows up as A P3 500 (501 to be exact). The repair shops says the m/board is jumperless and that they can't change the multipliers to make it read 667 Mhz. The machine seems marginally slower than before.
Does anyone know if they are correct about the jumperless m/board and if so is there anything I can do to change the multiplier settings to make it show up and operate as a P3 667?
It is a HP Pavilion 6616, 100 Mhz FSB.
Any help greatly appreciated!!

I think there is some software or something. Somebody else will probably be able to help you there. But for a piece of mind, a P3 at 500MHz will crush a celeron at 566MHz.

Thanks "The Lodge". Yes you would think so but it doesn't actually seem to be faster but a little slower if anything.
I understand there wouldn't be much difference in speed between the 2 chips but the main reason I would like to get the P3 chip up to its correct speed is so that I can add a DVDS/CD burner combo. My local retailer has one for $80 AUS. but says that 500 Mhz is probably touch and go for min. requirements and that 600 Mhz+ would normally be the min. for a reasonably good result from the DVD. I also want to add a digital TV tuner so I want to get my full wack of speed if possible.
Best Regards from Australia

If your computer seems to be running slow, try updating and running these two programs. SpyBot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) and Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/) . Delete any thing it finds. Spy\ad-aware is one of the biggest and overlooked things that can bring a computer to it's knees. Post back and let me know if it helps at all. :t

Sounds like you've got one of those micro-ATX systems from HP. It probably has a Trigem mobo onboard with built-in everything.
Which exact model number of the HP Pavilion do you have? If you do have the micro-ATX system, then there are several weaknesses that design has 1) underpowered power supply (PSU rated at or below 150-watts), 2) memory modules are PC-66 since you said you had a Celeron 566 CPU (that's part of the reason it runs slow is that the clock is running at 66-MHz and not 100-MHz or 133-Mhz for the Pentium-III CPU (the maximum memory speed supported is PC-100), 3) low memory count since it shares memory with the onboard video and 4) all-in-one mobos are always slower by design. The Pentium-III 667-MHz CPU requires memory running at PC-133. The Intel 810 chipset only supports 66-MHz and 100-MHz speeds and not the 133-MHz speed! Intel 810E chipset would support 133-MHz speed CPUs.

If you look at the BIOS chip there is a stick-on label that might say COGNAC on it. There were several revisions of this Korean manufactured mobo. Same one used by e-Machines with a difference in the Logo shown on boot-up. Let us know which model you have and I see what you could change on the mobo to speed it up!

By the way, I found the specs on your system and here it is:

As far as I could see, it is not feasible to upgrade this unless you transfer it to a different case and PSU. You are going to have to deal with heat issues if you don't. I know this for fact since we are the authorized HP replacement parts distributors! I know the case, PSU and components that are inside. Also, the issues and problems that they have. And that is why I would suggest switching to a different case and PSU. Good luck!

specific model numbers would help, but lptech is right. it's probably a 810 board that only has up to 100mhz support.

5x100= 500
5x133= 667

Yes its an 810 chipset supposedly @ 100Mhz. Pavilion 6616.
System specs: 667Mhz P3 (operating at only 501 Mhz), 256 Mb RAM (PC 133), !!Mb shared video, MPEG-1/2, 3D stereo, PCI 32 bit sound, 40 Gig HDD.
Does it sound like it has enough guts to run a DVD player ???
I take it overclocking would not be possible either?

PS (to The Lodge) have downloded those spybot and adaware progs. thanks.

Thanks to Lptech & Mydnite for all the great info.

give up trying to OC an HP. it's not going to happen.

That board just can't handle the "EB" cpus. sorry.

That comp should have no problem with a CDRW/DVD. Just be sure to clean out all spyware, like stated before, run virus scan, and defrag the harddrive. You should be just fine.

Delete everything from the "startup" menu that isn't neccessary. That can be found under START-PROGRAMS-STARTUP

Ok I will be taking all the advice and I'll just forget about trying to make it run faster and just get on with the job of installing the CDRW/DVD.
^Thanks to you all for your wealth of information, it has been greatly appreciated. You are a fine bunch of guys THANKS !!!
