I have a really strange problem.

When I install Win98 into my computer, everything is fine, UNTIL i try to play music from my CD-ROM player. The screen completely freezes and I have to reset. But, when I install Win95 into the same computer, there's no problem listening to music.

Is there something wrong with my CD-ROM or my sound card. I think it's the sound card because I can access the CD-ROM for non-music/sound applications. Is it possible that the sound card isn't Win98 compatible. I assume that Win98 is backward compatible with Win95, and anything that works on a Win95 computer should work on a Win98?

I thank you guys in advance.

I can' give you a specific answer, but what I found that Win98 did to my Win95 laptop may give a clue.

Laptops being as proprietary as they are and having bought a TI with is owned now by ACER, I found myself out in the cold for updated drivers. Win98 to the rescue....
It had a new driver for everything in the system....everything. Fortunately in my case, they were all a distinct improvement.

I suspect in your case, you are correct in thinking it is the sound card. Check the driver for it in Contro Panel. If Win98 overwrote the older driver with one of its own, it could be half-baked. I would check with the sound card manufacturer's site for their latest driver. I am sure Bill didn't get everything right.

Squish the bugs!

I don't think it's the sound card. I downloaded the newest driver, and the problem still occurs. It not the sound card, 'cause when Win98 boots up, I hear the boot-up sound.

What gives?

Give this a try. Check autoexec.bat and config.sys and make sure there is no cd rom drivers loading.. in them.. if there is rem them out..

2nd.. go to contol panel-->multimedia-->devices-->expand media control devices-->make sure CD audio device is there and wave audio device.. if not use add new hardware to install them...

3rd if they are there.. make sure cd audio device properties is use this media control device.. and no ! marks in any of them.. also make sure the little cable from the cd rom to soundcard is in connected properly..

and make sure bus mastering is installed.

Sounds like DMA might be enabled on your
cdrom. Your cdrom probably is not dma.
Get into Device manager. Windows key and the break key will get you there pronto or go to control panel and double click system. Click on the device manager tab. Double click the cdrom and then double click the the cdrom that popped up. Click the settings tab and uncheck the dma box. Restart and see if it happens again.

If this does not work provide more details on your system and problem.

I was going to mention the DMA thing too, but Junior beat me too it. I had the same problem, and unchecking that damned DMA box fixed it beautifully. Good luck.
