Even worse than the KKK there was a Brit politician in Margret Thatchers govt with the same name, though he's probably Lord Whitelaw now, so maybe youv'e got a super rich relly, so somewhere to stay if you ever make the mistake of visiting that part of the world.

me personally I hope I'm not related to a Brit or a Indian. Nothing against Brits but Indians hate white folk and I don't think I would ever be accepted into a tribe.

My surname could be from anywhere in Britain, even the O'Irish counterparts. It also refers to the name of an African race, sometimes thought to have Spanish links.

Hint: it was featured as a misspelled Trivial Pursuit answer on "Seinfeld."

My ancestrial last name was LaForce, my ancestor was a merchant seaman from Calais, France. After serving on shipboard for three trips to the U.S. ending in 1690, he remained in the U.S.

I have often wondered exactly what the name implies as I read in a couple of famous books that it was the name of the Bastille in Paris. Now, does anyone know if the Bastille was named after a famous statesman or a famous criminal?:D

here M. LaForce

---------------------------

There was Seigniories, ("villages"), a hotel and I'm sure a lot of other things called LaForce. There was also a prison of that name close to La Bastille.

2 days before La Bastille incident (revolution), on july 12, 1789, a large group of ppl freed all the prisoners of LaForce. A few years later (sept 1792) a massacre took place in that same prison.

LaForce wasn't their name at first... in the early days, French, designated families with an additional name based on their occupation/rank/particularities. (it's the case of a lot of french names... mine included) Some families later took it as their last name.

Jean (de) Mathieu de La Force was one of them. (he had quite a few titles too as you can see) - Honorable Homme Jean Matthieu, sr. De la Borderie, officier de G. de Bosredon, baron d'Herment, en 1469-1503. -

There was a lot of nobles of that name (dukes, lords, barons, marquis, marshals, etc..)

de Caumont de La Force family was a prestigious one.

--------------------------

oh and BTW M. de LaForce, you mean "your" entertainment... :r

As I posted, my ancestor actually arrived in the U.S. in 1690 as an immigrant, over 100 years prior to the revolution. I guess my question still remains though, what or for whom was the prison (LaForce) named after? I was hoping it wasn't some infamous axe murderer.:p

it must have been named after a duke (or something!).
You'd need the city archives to know for sure...

do you knw where this come from? I'm no historian!... :p I didn't know about the "de" meaning but to what I read, (interesting read too) the "de" particle was used with surnames to design the land (seigniory - fief) that a Lord or any non noble person owned.

At first only nobles could buy fiefs but later that right was given to anyone that could afford it. But there was indeed a beleif in the population that it was a sign of nobility.

Then other ppl started to change their names too (adding a surname preceded by the "de" particle) in a attempt to higher their social status.

Last names could identify a real noble family... not surnames.
