I can play cds fine, but whenever I try and install a program or run a program off the cd it says that the cd isn't there.. Its a pretty new cd-rom. I have tried replacing the ide cable, but that didn't do anything.. Can you help?

Do you have the DMA setting checked in the windows:System panel? If so, take it off. If that doesnt work, you may need to fdisk/format/reinstall win9x.

This sounds familliar...do you have Norton utilities and/or Norton Antivirus programs running? If so they could be the cause. Try uninstalling Norton Utilities in safe mode, and then see if the CDROM works - if not try it without the Antivirus (I recommend that you uninstall any Norton programs while in safe mode)

....if the Norton thing does not apply to you then double check the jumpers master/slave on your CDROM. Also check the device manager and see if your IDE controlers have any yellow !!! next to them or if your are running in MSDOS compatibility mode, you may need to update your drivers for the IDE controlers.
