Hey all,

I am new to building computers and have just finished building my first one. It was great, however, I need help understanding some things. First let me give you a little insight on the system I put together:

Cpu: AMD Athlon 2500+ 333MHz FSB
Mobo:AOpen AK79D-00VN w/ nForce 2 Ultra 400
Ram: 512 PC2700 333MHz
Video:GForce FX 5200 128
Case:Raid Max Scorpio Gaming Case w/ 400W PS
Networking: Wireless
Peri:Logictec MX Duo (WS Mouse and kybrd)
OS: XP Home
Optical: CD-RW

Nothing special...I was on a pretty tight budget.

Now, When I start the computer it runs through the POST and then I see the settings for the bios. They are set at a rate that seems slower than it should be. For example: CPU frequency is automatically detected at 133 MHz and is only running at 1.46 GHz, doesn't the 2500+ support 333MHz FSB?

Is there any configuration that I have to go through to finalize the setup? I assume it is only using the defaults. I have gone through the bios, but don't undertand some of it.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It should be a setting in the BIOS that you need to change. Look for something called FSB or Front Side Bus speed and set it to 166MHz (333 DDR). What type of RAM are you using? You'll need at least PC2700 to get the most out of your system.

One more thing I just noticed. I have downloaded the Everest Home Edition Software and ran the computer summary. It says "CPU Type: AMD Athlon XP-A, 1466 MHz (11 x 133) 1900+. The CPU that I thought I was purchasing was a 2500+. Did I get ripped off? This doesn't make sense to me. I mean the packaging was official, and unopened. Frustrating...

Set the right FSB first, then check what is reported ;) If you're up to taking the heatsink off, you can post the numbers and codes on the CPU's little black label so we can confirm the processor model.

Wait, hold on, I think I see something...Yes. It now says 2500+ and has changed to 1833MHz. I feel a little stupid...haha. Thanks to those who helped I really appreciate it. If you have any suggestions on how I can get the most out of the system I put together please let me know. Thanks

No offense... but CPU configuration would have been covered in the manual. :) Quite often, the board will detect the CPU correctly... but not always. Enjoy the system.
