I cannot get a connection between my wireless card and DSL modem. Modem works fine with hard wire connection, so I know modem is working. Wireless card is present in device manager. so I think install of card went okay. The green light on card refuses to come on. The orange light keeps flashing, which I believe is a signal that there is no communication between modem and card. I'm not very familiar with this sort of thing so what do I need to do or check in windows for possible reason why I can't get connection? Any help appreciated.

do you have a wireless router or access point? if not, then you can't connect using a wireless card.

The DSL modem has wireless capablilities.
I just thought of something.... The laptop that has wireles card in it was configured with a wire connection to DSL. I removed ethernet PCMCIA card and inserted/configured the wireless card. Would that matter? Being the same computer?

did you shut off the modem BEFORE you tried connecting the wireless card? it might still have the MAC address of the wired NIC. you need to match the SSID of the access point and the wireless nic.
brands and models of your hardware would help. ;)

I believe it is a Actiontec DSL modem. I did not shut the modem off. I immediately went to card install. It still may had wired Mac Address. Should I turn off computer, turn off modem, then restart computer with wireless card and then turn on modem and see what happens?

turn off both the modem and the computer. turn on the MODEM first. allow it to boot up. then power up the computer. you should be able to detect the SSID of the modem.
Do you know the model number of your modem? What kind of wireless network card do you have? it's hard to help you if you don't provide the proper information.

I have an Actiontec DSL modem model #GT701-WG
Wireless card is 11MBPS Wireless card bus (Can't find brand name)
I'm going to try and reset modem and computer and see what happens.
Thanks

How do I enable the wireless feature of my Actiontec GT701-wg Wireless DSL Gateway?
Wireless networking is disabled by default in your Actiontec GT701-wg Wireless DSL Gateway. With just a few, simple steps you can enable the wireless feature.
Enabling wireless networking:
To access the Actiontec Web interface to modify your settings, type 192.168.0.1 into the address field of your Web browser and press enter.
Select Setup/Configuration | Advanced Setup | Begin Advanced Setup| Wireless Setting.
Finally, select On next to Wireless.

Midknyte......Thank you very much for the info. I am up and running wireless.
Pete1:)
Hey - thanks for the useful info - I had the exact same problem, and now am up and running wireless!
Next question - I'm a complete idiot when it comes to wireless networking. My question is - what should I do about encryption? I set up the modem (linksys wireless g) with 128 bit encryption - do I need to set the same up in the Actiontec setup page - or am I covered?
Thanks in advance.

Please don't hijack someone else's thread. create a new one for yourself NEXT TIME.
what hardware do you have? is it a modem and router combo? exact make and model number, please.
you need to set the WEP or WPA encryption on both the wireless router and the client WNICs.
Sorry about the hijacking - but I am running the Actiontec GT701-wg Wireless DSL Gateway (same as the earlier post and the topic of this thread) with a linksys Wireless G Notebook Adaptor.
I have set up WPA encryption for the wireless card so far - but am unsure about how to go about setting the encryption for the Actiontec without a stable IP address.
Thanks and my apologies.

don't enable any encryption unless you have a good connection first. then you can start to enable encryption. You need to make sure that you match the type of encryption on both the router and nic. some don't support wpa.
