I am running win98. I have a 4.5 gb scsi drive as my boot drive and a 4 gb ide as the D: drive. The performance tab in System Properties is reporting that my D: drive is in MS Dos compatibility mode. I have tried every possible configuration on the ide controllers (primary-master or slave and secondary-master or slave) and the device manager will show a hardware conflict on the ide controller (primary or secondary) my hard drive is connected to. I have checked the registry for noide and Bad_ide to no avail.

I know I can get rid of compatibility mode if I make my ide drive the boot drive but I would like my scsi drive to be the boot as it is faster.

I checked the Microsoft Knowledge Base and found that Win98 will report MS dos compatibility on an IDE drive if it is not the boot drive.

Apparently I need a file called Esdi_506.pdr
The attributes for this file: Version 4.10.2002 Date 11-10-98
Should be located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS

I think that Windows 98 SE RC1 should have this file. Was wondering if anyone can send me the file? Thanks.

I do that a file named that but it is not of the version you want...you need to find someone who has access to the SE version of win98....microsoft is going to charge 19.95 for the sp1 and updates....can you believe it!

you can do three things

you can make the ide your boot drive so that it's happy

or

you can update the machine.inf file at this address www.developer.intel.com/design/chipsets/drivers/95setupex.htm (http://www.developer.intel.com/design/chipsets/drivers/95setupex.htm)

or

open regedit at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVIC ES\VXD\IOS

look for "NOIDE 01" entry
click on "NOIDE 01"
select edit
select delete

reboot system
