Hi, a friend of mine is having problems when dialing up.
On her desk top some icons have appeared, as follows; 'infamous downloader', 'silent', ' "MFC" install 2', 'cs4p028', '0021-bdl94126'. When she dials up all sorts of pages start opening and we can't stop it. She doesn't know how the icons got there, and if we put them in the bin, when we restart they are back.
She has Spybot on her PC, which I've run, but its still happening.
Can anyone tell me whats going on, and how to fix it please......

Appears to be adware / spyware . Use CWShredder , Adaware and Spybot S&D . Update them all before using . Restart between each scan and fix ALL.

Thanks for your reply, but I can't get her PC on line to download anything. What should I do?

OS ?
Usually these things put an entry in msconfig, you could try looking there and disable anything you dont need or not sure of.
Also, CWShredder or HijackThis will fit on a floppy if you dont have a burner to copy needed programs to a CD .
You can use this
Startup List (http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php) to reference any items your not sure of. The idea is to stop the program from running so you can remove it.

Managed to do a virus check and found 34 of them!!!!!! One of them was a boot virus...is that worse?
Also did an updated Spybot check and found loads!!!!!!!!!!
Seems to be sorted now,
thanks for your help....x

A related problem: I plugged my friends pc into my keyboard and monitor at my place to fix it, and had to install drivers for my monitor, but now that she has the pc back at her place, when it starts up the screen goes blank.
Is it because of the driver I installed for my monitor, and if so, how do I sort it?

Windows should recognize and load the previous monitor at startup. I would suspect something came loose during transit. If all the connections and the video card is seated correctly, boot using the F8 key, select VGA mode, then correct the Display Adapter / Monitor settings in Display Properties as needed.

Thanks.
What will the F8 key do, and what is VGA mode?
It's running 98se btw.
