Hi, I have a group of Windows XP & 98 computers on a small network with a hub connected by cat 5 cable. I also have a router with an ADSL modem for Internet access and sharing on the same network. All the computers obtain their IP address automatically from the router as they are set as DHCP enabled. The main Win XP Pro computer runs a database program and I need to be able to access this from another remote location. The computer I have at the remote site is a Win XP Pro computer with a dialup modem for internet access. Do I need a Router with built in VPN capabalities or can I set it up using the Win XP built in VPN. If so what steps do I need to do to get this happening. If this is not possible what other options do I have?

I use a firewall/router for my small home LAN. To make my life a little easier, I use RealVNC (http://www.realvnc.com/) to maintain all the boxes. The setup is fairly easy: install RealVNC listenservers on each client machine, and then install the viewer on the admin machine. In your case, it sounds like an installation of both listenserver and viewer would be needed so you can go back and forth between XP boxes.
The viewer can then be used to control the clients. A password is recommended / required to access each. (BTW: When I first started using RealVNC, it freaked my kids out to no end! :D)

you will have to set up the firewall to allow RealVNC to get through. I believe it is port 5900.
