I first tried a search to see if I could find the answer to this, but all I found was how most dislike Zone Alarm.
I have 2 computers on my network, both running WinXP Pro, both running thru a D-Link wireless router(DI-614+) but both hardwired.
It seems the only way both computers can access each other is if I shut down Zone Alarm on one of them. It has to be shut down on the 'other' computer, my sons. I can leave it running on mine, and as ling as it is shut down on his, networking works like it should. It sure looks like I have both Zone Alarm pgms set up the same. I added a 'trusted network" with a range of 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.199 (his is shown as 192.168.0.100 and mine is 192.168.0.103)
At firest I thought it was thr router, but that is set up with all the default settings. Not sure how to set that up as a firewall

So uninstall it. You have NAT thanks to the router. Keep a sharp eye for virus updates and you won't need a firewall. If you insist, there are other free ones like Outpost, Tiny and Sygate.

You can check your settings...
Firewall Main Tab
Internet Zone Security.. set High
Trusted Zone Security.. set Medium
Advanced .. check
Allow outgoing DNS/DHCP in Trusted and Internet on High Setting
Firewall Zones Tab
For each pc ..Select Add > Subnet . Enter the info of the other pc . Should be
IP 192.168.0.xxx
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Description "his" or "mine" ;)
*Your adapter should be listed with the correct subnet mask .

Zone Alarm has a tendancy not to want to play with networks at all, one of the factors which makes me dislike it so (even the Pro version with added network functionality seems just as useless).
As Bill states there are mnay alterbnatives out there which will do a better job of dealign with networks, my personal reccomendation would be Outpost, followed by Sygate PF

So since I have a router, I don't really need to have the software firewall? I'm not to familier on what, and how, to set up the router. Are the default settings usually enough?
I have to admit, ZA has been a pain in the **** sometimes

I'll double chack my settings, and give that a try. I think I may just uninstall ZA all together tho.

The router is very effective at screening out hackers, but cannot prevent trojans from "phoning home".

That is my biggest worry, someone gaining access to my network. Is the router set up for this by default, or do I need to make some changes? (D-Link DI-614+)

As I've said many times, if you have and use a good, updated antivirus program, the router is all you need. It's all I need. I don't use firewalls. I am on cable and I was never affected by the Blaster worm.
The router uses NAT to keep unwanted traffic out. No config is necessary.

Ok, thanks :) I do keep Norton up to date. I have uninstalled ZA, so I will see how things go from here
