I've had probs like this before

Got windows XP home on three computers
2 upstairs and 1 in the basement

all have fine internet access through Earthlink/Sprint modem DSL and are connected through a Linksys BSFE41 4 port router

all are showing IP addresses in line and order

all are networked with the same settings through XP's home networking wizard

*this computer connects directly or through a network hub. Other computers on my network also connect to the internet directly or through a hub*

and are all on MSHOME for a workgroup

I have also tried the selection:
*this computer connects to the internet through another computer on my network or through a residential gateway*

as I said all are XP

all computers have User set as administrator

now when I open "My Network Places" it SHOWS all three computers and folders shared just fine...so it recognizes the computers. But when you try to access a folder on any other computer this is the message that pops up:

"*computer name/folder* is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the Admisinistrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

I have reset through the Wizard three times and rebooted all computers several times....same results

so it has me totally stumped

any ideas please

I get that message all the time. 2 computers networked with WinXP Pro. I think my problem has something to do with Zone Alarm tho. I read the link from Direct1, but it didn't solve my problem

yes...I appreciated the link too and am still working on it

I have Norton Personal Firewall and have network settings the same for all three computers with permissions given for the IP ranges that include all three...and Netwrok adapters recognized on each computer perspectively....

computer two talks to computer three but the minute computer one comes online BOOM .. connections stop between the three although all three show in MY NETWORK CONNECTIONS...then now I have one back talking to three and computer one doesn't even show

I'm still giving it a good hearted go though....
its a process of trial and error ... check settings again and reboot

now in the link to Bipola'rs head pounder to make a sticky on it? :D They are saying to add the user name to each and every computer that you are trying to connect with in order to get permissions? and do this to each computer (I repeated myself)

do I understand this right?

and please help me understand also since it has to do with hardware...my internet connection is fine..using the modem to router then to all three computers from the router....

what is the difference between a router and what I hear called a HUB?

Some will refer a switch as a hub , but they are different.

Your Linksys router has a switch.

Since you have only 1 pc thats causing the issue, I would remove and reinstall the nic in Device Manager. Then manually setup the nic properties . You can use the other pc's to reference from .

thx RocketMech:
one thing I have noticed since going to the supplied links is that the one computer giving me the woes is using the onboard lan (Asus A7V8x-x) so it isn't using an NIC card as the other two (USROBOTICS RealTek). Thus the properties are far different for network adapters in DEVICE MANAGER...

Sorry, I meant remove the Realtek ethernet adapter from Device Manager, restart and allow Xp to reinstall it.
Then, open Control Panel > Network Connections , and select the Local Area Connection that refers to your onboard nic, and select properties. These are the "nic properties" I was referring to. All your network adapters should be using the same settings. The default settings in the link should be all you need .
Also, Open My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > select Simple File Sharing if its not checked.
The link above also has links to setting up shares files.

okay...both computers that share (2 and 3) have no problem with internet conectivity nor talking with each other

computer number 1 using the onboard lan has totally different properties...so I actually took the NIC card out of downstairs...disabled other hardware for network adaptors...let xp home find and install the drivers for the network card...I have internet connectivity and still no intercommunication to the 2nd computer *(3rd's down since I stole its card)

this has to be a simple I am sure as I said and sorry for tasking any patience

are you saying to reload drivers to all NIC hardware

maybe shut down all other computers other than no1

wizard the first one since I cannot find properties even close enough to duplicate

then wizard and restart the other to in sequence>

only the two original #2 and #3 computers had similar properties for advanced in NIC configuration...the onbaord no1 asus lan was totally different

and on all three computers in XP Home (not professional mind you...just a thought and note)...there is no existant "Open My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > select Simple File Sharing"

simple file sharing is not there to even select

just input and still lost...forgive me

Lets just focus on the pc thats not working ...#1 pc.

You remove the network adapter from Device Manager. Since its an onboard device you can't physically remove it, eh? ;)
You then configure the network adapter in Control Panel > Network Connections. The onboard nic will be listed as ' Local Area Connection' with a matching name as the one in Device Manager . These are the settings that should be the same as those on the other pc's , not the ones in Device Manager.
If your running a firewall on this pc , disable it till the lan is working. But be sure XP is fully updated first.

KEWELLLLLLL!!!!...Now that makes sense to a slow head like me *jests*

network properties are the same with good residential gateway # and with same subnet masks and individual in sequence IP's

10.10.10.0 on up to 10.10.10.103 clear in firewall permissions

will try the lack of firewall while setting the bad behavior PC up and see if it allows it..there "IS" a differnce in antivirus and firewalls from norton's 2002 to 2003 and up to NIS2004 on the bad PC
