I have disk defrag set to run on a schedule with the task scheduler, and every time it tries to defrag the HD my system freezes and I have to restart it. Usually the system has been sitting for a while when it starts to defrag since I have it set to begin at 2am and my computer is always on. Any help or any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Run a thorough scan disk a couple of times before running defrag and get back to us if the problem persists.

Also please supply details of your system configuration: i.e. how many drives - types of drives - master/slave arangements etc. Other details would be useful as well.

Is this the only problem you are experiencing in your system?

I've got a WD 5.1GB UDMA, and yes, it's the only problem I have with my system. I run a PII 350 (not o/c), 128MB PC100, 32x Creative CDROM, SBLive Value, Matrox Mill G200, cable modem. This has only started in the past few weeks. It's not the SBLive as I just out that in four days ago. Thanks again.

some tsr proggies will cause disk defrag to either restart continuously or to lock up.If you hit ctrl, alt, del and open the close program screen, how many proggies are listed in there?try turning everything but explorer and systray off and then run the defrag and see if you still have the same prob.get back to us if ya do.

I agree with ENVY.. (I envy you, JK).. a utility such as anti-viral software will cause your system to not defrag(period). either disable them or use msconfig to remove them from startup then do your maintenance

A couple of things:

Turn off screensavers!

Turn off power management!

Set a static pagefile/ virtual memory (ie: min and max at same value)

Stop all other background apps from running by ending the task from pressing control alt delete.

Remove 'findfast' from the startup group if you have ms office.

Disconnect the pc from your network while defragging.

What a pain in the ***. Win98 has that nice Task Scheduler to run certain maintenance programs at specified times and you guys are basically saying that I'm going to need to make some either temporary or permanent changes before running the maintenance. How lame! I'll figure something out to automate that ****. The stuff that starts when my computer starts I have chosen to be on there. I don't let rogue programs run rampant in my system. I keep a close eye on what files go where and what gets shoved into my startup without me knowing. This is THE ONLY problem with my computer at all. EVERYTHING else works perfectly. I leave my system on 24/7. Could that pose any sort of problem? I seriously doubt it, but what the hell!

We'll see what happens tonight when I try to run it.
Thanks again

Yes that's correct. You will have to either disable it before u run maintenance wizard or.. remove it from startup.
