I am setting up a home network and having trouble sharing the internet connection.

This is my setup.
Have a cable modem which connects to Machine 1.

XP on Machine 1---This is the main machine connecting to the net.

98SE on Machine 2.---This is my second machine connecting to the Machine 1 through a crossover cable(since I am not using a hub, I am not using a ethernet cable)

I have followed the setup procedures and done the following :

1. Installed ICS on machine #1.
2. Installed file and sharing on machine #2.
3. Same user account on both machines.
4. For now, switched off zonealarm etc.

I can share files and folders on both machines.
I can ping both machines from each other.
I can get to the internet from machine #1.

But from machine #2, I cannot get to the internet.

What else could be wrong in my setup?
Any suggestions on where to look?

Thanks
K

Please post your thread in the appropriate forum. Moved to Networking.

Did you look at this sticky yet?
http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=150866

are you obtaining the IP automatically from machine 2? machien 1 will have a static 192.168.0.1 for the LAN interface. did you release and renew the IP on machine #2? what does it say when you run winipcfg? you should have dns information there.

Forget ICS and just use a simple proxy server:

http://www.analogx.com

Look in Networking for proxy, it should take you less than 30 seconds per computer to install and configure.

heck, get a router instead of any software proxy. they're so cheap now. I remember paying $200 for my little Linksys.

I did not run winipcfg yet.

machine 1 got 192.168.0.0
machine 2 got 192.168.0.1

I did that manually.

Maybe I should look at a proxy server....any advantages as far as performance going that route?

With a router, wont I still have to configure both the machines to access it somehow anyway?

you cannot use 192.168.0.0 that is the network ID. you can only use IPs from 192.168.0.1 to 254. 255 is the broadcast address, so you can't use that either.

ICS should have automatically set your host system LAN IP as 192.168.0.1. DO NOT CHANGE THIS!

Machine 1 (LAN) = 192.168.0.1 (preset by ICS)
Machine 2 = obtain IP automatically (do not use static IP)

ICS IS a proxy.

You would just need to set up the systems to obtain IP automatically with a router. set your workgroup and usernames as normal.

sorry, they are setup with 192.168.0.1 and 0.2
do usernames have to be the same on both machines?

do I still need to configure the gateway and DNS stuff manually?

did you look at the link I posted earlier? it will answer many of your questions.

you don't HAVE to use the same usernames and passwords, but you do need to at least add them as users on the other computer. you also have to match the passwords. it's easier just to use the same username and password.

you won't have to enter the gateway or dns IF you set to obtain IP automatically like I told you. If you really want to use static IPs, use 192.168.0.254 instead of 192.168.0.2. Then you need to enter 192.168.0.1 as the gateway and copy the dns information from the ICS Host to the client. It's much easier to obtain IP automatically, since it will update that info for you.

I have both the username and the passwords the same.
I did leave everything to automatically assign IPs.

Funny thing is it worked once...but then when i rebooted, something went goofy--and then i was only able to share files and folders, not the internet.

Let me ask this---To verify that ICS was installed correctly, should I be seeing a sharing button on the internet>>>tools>>> tab??? or does that button only show up on 98se?

I read through all those articles...

Ok let me put my original question in a diff way....

Does the sharing of files and folders on my network a part of ICS install? Or is the ICS part only the internet access part of it?

This will help me figure out what;s going wrong.
Because file sharing works--only internet access is the issue.

thanks.

Sharing of files happens when File and Print Sharing is enabled in your network config in System Panel, provided of course you have the correct clients, adapters and protocols installed. The PCs connected do not need to have the same "computer name" but must have the same workgroup name. ICS is just for sharing internet connection. Follow midknytes advise regarding the IP addresses.

Of course, once everything is set up, you need to setup your browser as well.

ICS and file sharing are two different things. Please read the above links for how tos on ICS. Only machine 2 should be on obtain IP automatically. ICS should have assigned the IP on machine 1 for you.

Just out of curiosity. Why you are not using a Cable/DSL Router?

Any $10 Router will beat ICS.

You get a Router, you connect it like this: Link to: Diagram of Broadband Connection with Cable/DSL Router. (http://www.ezlan.net/~network/router.jpg)

1. For the Router to work it has to be set to right connection (i.e. Cable or DSL)

2. If your Cable ISP is using your main computer MAC as a form of communication, the MAC as to be Cloned to the Router.

3. If you are on PPPOE DSL the ID and PW has to be entered to the appropriate menu. The “Always Keep Alive” has to be checked.

After setting the above the Router will function at Default Level.

If you insist to stay with ICS then disable ICS and make sure that you have a Functional Network with working Shares, and then switch ICS On.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Settings, and Sharing.
