What motherboard is it and what version of Windows 95 or 98?

First try installing any chipset drivers that came with the board, being careful to follow the directions...read the readme..

Still have a problem? Now look in the device manager and see if the hard disk controlers have a yellow asterix beside them - if so remove the controlers using the "Remove" button and reboot your system--you may have to reboot twice as Windows detects and installs the hard disk controlers.

Still have a problem? Look under "System Devices" in the device manager and find the entry for "PCI Bus," remove it and reboot. Your system will start finding and reinstalling hardware on reboot and may have to reboot several times. Now look in the device manager again - any problems? ..yellow !!!s?

You may need to reinstall the operating system.

I thought version A doesn't support bus mastering? That's only for version B. Was this a clean install and not over another version?

Check out the site below for more info on the MS-dos compatibility mode file syetem.

are both hard drives on the same channel. if so put each drive on different channel as master. and put cd rom as slave on either channel.

Win95a?? ..that could be a problem. I do not believe you can get certain things to work with version A, such as AGP, possibly also USB and UDMA support (not sure)...

One thing is for sure, it would be best to do a clean install of Win95B or higher from the CDROM using a boot disk with CDROM support to get you started. Maybe a friend has a copy of Win95B or C that you could borrow or have a copy burned for you -- you already possess a licence for Win95a (if your copy is legit)and the same product ID number will work with either version B or C..so I do not see how this would be breaking any licence agreement with MS -- but then who has ever read all the fine print.

BTW -I have a boot disk with support for an IDE CDROM (providing the CDROM is on the secondary IDE set as master) and I will gladly upload it if you ever have the need email me.

when you downloaded the BMIDE drivers from intel did you get the 95INF update utility. you can get it here www.developer.intel.com/design/chipset/drivers/95setupex.htm (http://www.developer.intel.com/design/chipset/drivers/95setupex.htm) . try to update the inf file if that still won't fix the problem.
then try this open regedit go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENT CONTROL SET\SERVICES\VXD\IOS
look for " NOIDE 01 " entry
click on " NOIDE 01 "
select edit
select delete

reboot system.

glad everything is working out.
do you have CD-ROM device in config.sys?
it shouldn't be, or you will use MS-DOS mode.

**** after all these posts.. the problem IS he is loading his cd rom drivers in DOS.. autoexec.bat and config.sys.. cd rom drivers are loading.. therefore getting a msdos compatibility on C:

Not so sure about the config.sys statement.
I have an NEC 4X6 Changer. It is listed in the config.sys, but Win95 installation remarked out the lines in autoexec.bat.
I am NOT in compatibility mode.

BTW..Original Win95 (no service packs). 2) 4gig WD HDD on the primary PCI/IDE. My CD is master on the secondary IDE. The have had 2 other HDDs. They were a 2.1Gig WD and the 540mb Seagate (monster) that came with the system. If you happen to have that old drive, it does not like to coexist with anything. It will absolutely refuse to be a slave and didn't like the CDrom as slave either.
