re:Aptiva 2159/s7h
It's gettin harder and harder to get connected to my isp. 2400 baud credit card terminal always works. I can log on sometimes with quicklinkIIfax. I have to reboot 10 times or more to get online. Usually says "can not negotiate protocols" The protocol are fine. Sometimes says "rnaapp" file missing. Works best first thing in the morning after cold boot. usually get on at 26400, sometimes 28800, once in a blue moon at 31600. Phone line is dedicated to modem.

Do I need a new modem?
Very annoying.

Thanks for any help.

i think there were some probs with mwave modems having something non-standard (thank ibm). but if it was working before, it does sound like the modem is failing.

or also check with your isp to see if they are making any changes on their side. they could be going through teething problems with an upgrade.

if you don't play online games, and you won't be switching from win9x in the near future, then winmodems are fairly cheap.

just saw your other post about the cdrom. if you're having a lot of these kinda probs, maybe your whole system (motherboard) is going. still under warranty?

thanks kwai
My aptiva is 3 years old, but runs fine most of the time. I've tuned windows(95) to run weeks without crashing. I'm not really suspecting the motherboard. I run my own hand written programs mostly (DOS) They are solid and never have crashed. Only windows crashes the machine. I have data from 15 years ago intact. Brought along from computer to computer starting with a TRS80 color computer.
