Aptiva cd rom prob

My cd 8x sometimes bombs out and I get a drive not ready error for weeks then it goes away and works for a while. Any clues?

which OS are u running?.. if win9x then rem the lines in your config.sys (*.sys) and autoexec.bat (mscdex.exe) that refers to your cd rom.. cuz 95 drivers will conflict with dos cd rom drivers.. also some cd rom drives require bus mastering enabled.. make sure u have those installed... in device manager.
