Am I the only one having a problem with this? When I play audio CDs it goes about 3 seconds then I get a message saying no cd has been detected & please insert one. The CD keeps playing, but the player acts like its off. The CDs were being controled by the windows CD player. I called Creative & we took the Windows CD Player off, verified all teh settings, links for audio CDs, and path to the player & it still dosn't work. They suggested I call Microsoft.

Try doing this.
Step 1.
If Windows' CD Player is installed, remove it with Control Panel's -Add/RemovePrograms -Windows SetUp -Multimedia/Details -CD Player.
Step 2.
Double click on My Computer.
Go to: View/FolderOptions/FileTypes.
Sroll down to CD Audio/Track or anything related to CD.
Highlight and remove them.
Step 3.
Go back to Control Panel in Step 1 and this time add the CD Player.
Reboot.
Note:
If CD Player is not installed, do Steps 2 & 3.

for me, the solution to all my sblive problems was simple, though it took me awhile to figure it out...make absolutely certain you have the latest busmaster for your mobo chipset.
when you are ready, edit your file types to steer audio cd's(and almost any other media type you want) to creative playcenter.

OK, I tried the first suggestion with the CD Player. All that did was make the CD Player the dfault for playing CDs. I lost Audio CD in the File Types, but found CD Audio Track & steered that to the CTplay.exe - no change. I just can't get the CTplay to be the default for audio. Will check out the motherboard bus masters next. It's an FIC VA503+ with an AMD K6-1, 350mhz.

That was the point. I should not have assumed that you understood this was to see if it would play under the regular CD Player. In order to eliminate hardware related issues.
I hope you took the time to check.
If it work all right, you probably need to reinstall the software.
If your original software didn't come with the latest fixed version for the Creative PlayCenter, go download it at the following under the Downloads section: http://www.sblive.com/main.html

Go back into File types and delete all references to audio cd's...then insert an audio cd...no program should open....then go into my computer, then open your cdrom drive with the audio cd...the icon should not be cd's....should be standard windows icons....then hold down shidt and right click on one (any one) then click on open with...
make sure the box is checked for always use this program to open this file type...then browse to C:\Program Files\Creative\PlayCenter\CTPlay.exe.
If all this fails use thedick detector that comes in the creative launcher...there you can specify which drive you want and which program you want to open when an audio cd is detected

Well I tried what gruven said & no dice. The CD still played while ctplayer still errored out. I removed CDplayer via add/remove software & still had the same results. I unchecked disk detector & now I could do what he suggested. I associated the file type, same results. I rechecked disk detector, same thing. I've reloaded the CTplayer previously but that didn't help. I think what I need to do is remove all the Creative apps, get CDplayer back as the default, and try a clean reinstall. If anyone has any other ideas, Im all ears.

I uninstalled all the Creative software, reinstaled the cd player, made sure it works, and deleted the SB Live from Device Manager. I rebooted, let Win98 rediscover the hardware & assign drivers, reinstalled the software ---same problem. I made sure the file type pointed to the CTplayer, and disk detector is set up. What I did notice this time is while the music is playing if I open CDplayer, it's also dead & thinks there is no disk installed.
