Hello, I have been kicking around the storage issure on my home server for some time now, I run NT 4 and have set up a 4 disk SCSI disk set under NT4 as a stripe set with parity (software). The actual NT installation resides on a different set of disks.
Now I have run out of room on the storage side, so I have been looking at larger disks, but have run into the price comparison with IDE drives, As a home system, actuall thougroput is not a big thing, and since SCSI or IDE is connected to a 32bit 33 mhz bus in my case, I am sure four drives of either type will saturate the 133 m/b max bus width.
That said, I have found the 3ware 5800 series 8 port IDE controller, which looks like it would fit the bill under JOBD, then I could use the NT4 to setup a parity stripe set (software) accross the disks.
BUT FINALLY MY QUESTION! How large of drives does the 5800 handle? up to 128 gig? or less? Anyone have any experience? My thought is to use 8 120 gig drives which would give me approx 800 mb's of useful parity capacity.
Any other thoughts on a relativly low cost solution would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance, David
